The incumbent will serve as communications manager focused on sharing voices and experiences of the UMBC community, particularly through social media. This staff member – a highly skilled and enthusiastic communications professional – will produce stories and coordinate media relations for campus events, activities, organizations, and experiences (e.g., athletics, study abroad, service-learning). They will develop an annual digital communications strategy, with focus on storytelling and relationship-building through social media, in accordance with institutional objectives, strategies, and brand standards. They will also produce and manage a social media content calendar for UMBC’s primary social media accounts (e.g., Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat); track and analyze social media metrics; recommend adjustments to more effectively reach goals; and cultivate relationships across the University for social media takeovers and other content development. Additionally, the communications manager will collaborate with digital director and other stakeholders on integration of social media in a broad range of UMBC digital platforms, and will facilitate UMBC Social Media Strategy Group and serve as a resource for social media managers within units across the University. They will complete these duties while consistently expressing and cultivating the university’s voice on social media, and keeping up with industry trends, including new social media platforms, technologies, and standards.

Required Minimum Qualifications: This position requires a bachelor’s degree, preferably in communications or other related field.  Must have: excellent written and verbal communication skills; experience with and knowledge of Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and YouTube posting and analytics; and the ability to work collaboratively within a communications team.
Preferred Qualifications:  Preferred candidates will also have a minimum of two years of social media work experience and/or student life-focused higher ed communications experience; experience with Snapchat (and other platforms); and the ability to pitch and place story ideas in the media, plus current knowledge of the media industry.
