Responsibilities:

UMBC is looking for a system administrator to help design, implement and innovate our next-generation High Performance Computing (HPC) cluster and central research computing environment. We have recently been awarded a substantial grant from the National Science Foundation to enhance our high performance computing cluster. This position will be the lead engineer on this initiative, helping to shape how this new environment is built and utilized throughout the campus as well as how it fits in with our existing systems. Our current environment consists of a 324 node cluster, additional research computing services and several petabytes of high speed storage. It is used by over 60 faculty research groups and several hundred users to conduct a wide variety of academic research across the university in areas ranging from computer science, information systems, data science, atmospheric research, mechanical engineering, biology, chemistry, physics and many more.

 This position will work closely with our existing Unix team to assist in the design of the new HPC cluster. The HPC administrator will be responsible primarily for implementation and operational management of both our existing and our new research computing environments.

 The main duties of this position are:

  • Administer UMBC’s HPC systems and research computing;

  • Install, configure, troubleshoot, analyze performance, tune, upgrade, patch, manage licenses and administer system backups;

  • Administer user account/environments;

  • Implement and maintain system security postures;

  • Assist with hardware/software installations.

 

Required Minimum Qualifications:

 

Requires a Bachelor's Degree.  Two to three years experience administering Unix systems preferred. 

Must be self-motivated and able to work independently and have a solid working knowledge of HPC environments; Enterprise Linux operating systems; Infiniband networking; TCP/IP networking and NFS; various advanced storage file systems. Applicants also should have a working knowledge of Openstack, Docker, Slurm or other cluster management tools and possess a thorough knowledge of current and emerging trends in research and high performance computing.

 

Preferred Qualifications: 

Experience working with High Performance Computing Systems

Experience working with supporting research environments, higher education or non-profit preferred but not required.
