bwtech@UMBC is a 525,000 SF research and technology park that houses 130 tenants and operates two technology incubators (life sciences, cybersecurity/IT).  bwtech@UMBC’s mission is to facilitate regional economic development and to support the research and technology commercialization goals of UMBC.

 

 

 

Responsibilities:

bwtech@UMBC’s Director of Entrepreneurial Services will be responsible for overseeing bwtech’s Incubator programs, advising bwtech and UMBC startup companies, and overseeing bwtech’s entrepreneur in residence program.  The Director will assist the Executive Director in managing bwtech’s equity portfolio and in identifying funding for bwtech companies and UMBC related startups.  The Director will also be a resource to UMBC’s tech commercialization efforts and work closely with UMBC site miners.

 

Specific responsibilities include:

  • Conduct periodic review and update of strategic and operating plans for business incubators to optimize their performance;
  • Develop programming resources to encourage the success of incubator companies and entrepreneurs, and to provide regular opportunities for entrepreneurs to network;
  • Work with Incubator Manager and Entrepreneurs in Residence to strengthen the Cync incubator, a partnership with Northrop Grumman focused on building cybersecurity product companies, and the iCyber Center, an international cyber incubator program;
  • Work with incubator manager to grow bwtech’s virtual Incubator (“Affiliate”) program;
  • Work in collaboration with incubator managers and coordinate entrepreneur in residence program;
  • Lead and develop content for Incubator Advisory Boards and develop “shadow boards” to advise  incubator companies;
  • Recruit sponsors and professional service providers to assist incubator companies and manage these relationships;
  • Facilitate connections and internships between bwtech companies and UMBC faculty and students, respectivelyl;
  • Market bwtech@UMBC and recruit companies into incubator, affiliate program, and research park;
  • Maintain close connection to local, regional and state economic development partners and other strategic partners such as Cybersecurity Association of Maryland (CAMI) and Data Tribe;
  • Manage and enhance bwtech’s entrepreneurial and incubation programs with the goal of creating successful technology companies and jobs;
  • Develop sustainable revenue streams for bwtech including rents, grants, sponsorship fees and equity positions;
  • Recruit and manage experienced industry entrepreneurs as “entrepreneurs in residence” and volunteer mentors and advisors; and
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

 

 

Required Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree (Master's preferred) preferably in a related field (technology, business, entrepreneurship, etc) and a minimum five years (seven preferred) professional or entrepreneurial experience.  Must be energetic, innovative, motivational and good with details, follow through and interpersonal relationships. 

 

Preferred Qualifications: 

Direct operational expense in building and financing a startup technology company or managing a technology company desired. 

Business development and experience with key technology sectors (life sciences, IT, cybersecurity, etc.) a plus.
