Student Conduct and Community Standards

The Office of Student Conduct and Community Standards supports the University’s dedication to student success and its educational purposes and goals by: publishing, enforcing, drafting and interpreting standards of student behavior and related policies and procedures; facilitating student and community developmental and ethical growth opportunities promoting personal integrity, civility, self-responsibility, citizenship and appreciation for diversity; working to maintain a safe and productive environment supporting the University’s educational purpose and the students’ educational goals; and promoting the privileges and responsibilities associated with a student’s affiliation with the University.



Reporting to the Associate Director of Student Conduct and Community Standards (SCCS), the incumbent will work closely with other units of the division to maintain a developmentally appropriate and accountable system for managing student conduct issues.  The incumbent will assist in the coordination of all duties related to the daily operation of SCCS.  Specific duties include: conducting judicial conferences with charged students; overseeing the selection, training, administration and advisement of the UMBC Hearing Board; reviewing incoming incident reports, mail, and correspondence; assigning cases and responding on behalf of the office; updating the Director and Associate Director on all issues and managing the day-to-day discipline cases; conducting educational programs; and performing other duties as assigned.   


Required Minimum Qualifications: Requires a Juris Doctorate or a Master’s degree in student personnel, higher education administration or related field and one year of college or university professional experience in student conduct or related area. Multicultural competence and the ability to work effectively with a diverse student body is required. Must have effective human relations skills and a thorough understanding of disciplinary legal issues and due process.  Familiarity with database systems for managing student conduct and students of concern is required. 
Preferred Qualifications:  Experience with restorative justice practices and/or mediation strongly preferred.
