Responsibilities:

The Senior Unix Systems Administrator/Specialist will play a key role in architecting, designing, and developing solutions within the Division of Information Technology at UMBC. This position will support complex systems which provide core services to the organization and to several key research areas across the campus including The Hilltop Institute.

The responsibilities include enhancing the overall systems and services, reliability and security of central services, and automated deployment of services both on-premise and in the public cloud. This position reports to the Unix Systems manager and candidates will be expected to work independently while also participating and helping to lead projects that will involve multiple technical areas.  

This position combines technical system administration with project leadership. The incumbent will integrate and support complex systems which provide core services to the organization and support our business systems.

Required Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or related field with at least three years of experience doing Linux system administration and five or more years' work experience in Systems Administration. 

  • Experience in the installation, maintenance, operation, tuning, and troubleshooting of Linux and related systems and software

  • Experience with scripting, volume & firewall management, virtualization, monitoring and supporting hardware & software issues.

  • Demonstrated skills in planning and deployment of complex information systems

  • Must be able to explain, document, and design complex technical architectures

  • Experience with programming and scripting languages

  • Experience with system automation tools such as Puppet, Ansible, or Chef

  • Experience with versioning tools such as Git or Subversion

  • Experience supporting enterprise application delivery (such as email, web, ERP, etc.).

  • Ability to manage time effectively, working both independently and as part of a team

  • Enthusiasm for learning new skills and adapting to a dynamic environment

  • Strong interpersonal skills, enthusiasm for customer service, and the ability to work with students, staff, and faculty from diverse backgrounds

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

  • Managing multiple customers, projects and competing priorities

Preferred Qualifications: 
  • Knowledge maintaining HIPAA or other highly sensitive system environments
  • Experience with following Agile values and principles as a member of a matrixed project team

  • Experience with cloud platforms for infrastructure (AWS preferred)

  • Working knowledge of database administration, specifically integrating database systems into larger enterprise applications
