Responsibilities:

The microscopy research assistant provides technical support for the imaging core facilities in the College of Natural and Mathematical Sciences (CNMS). 

Reporting to the manager, the microscopy research assistant provides technical support for the core imaging facilities at UMBC. Duties include quality control of major instruments (confocal laser scanning microscope (CLSM), transmission electron microscope (TEM), scanning electron microscope (SEM), atomic force microscope (AFM)), as well as specimen preparation, user training and assistance, image processing and analysis, and data management. This position requires previous experience with at least one type microscopy and the ability to learn a variety of new microscopy techniques. This incumbent will ensure that the imaging facilities are able to maintain their high standard of research support.

Specific duties and responsibilities include:

  • Perform microscopy equipment maintenance such as instrument alignment and troubleshooting technical issues.
  • Provide user training and guidance on image acquisition and data analysis, and develop standard operating procedures and usage manuals.

  • Develop and execute specimen preparation protocols for experiments.
  • Perform computer related duties such data backups and troubleshooting technical issues, and other duties as assigned.

Required Minimum Qualifications:

Requires a Bachelor's degree in biology, chemistry, engineering or field of study related to the research of the laboratory. Previous experience with at least one type of microscopy, such as confocal microscopy, TEM, SEM or AFM.

Preferred Qualifications: 

Extensive experience in more than one type of microscopy, and/or experience in specimen preparation and image analysis is preferred.
