The MCAC, a core facility in the College of Natural & Mathematical Sciences, is dedicated to developing cutting edge analytical techniques in order to solve modern problems while providing a stimulating learning environment and exposure to research for both undergraduate and graduate students. Open to universities and all other facilities in need of analytical techniques, the lab strives to be an environment of peer mentoring, professional team building, and a place to develop critical thinking skills by fusing academic research with both teaching and industry.

Responsibilities:

The Core Facility Manager is responsible for overseeing the daily operations of the MCAC.  Specific duties include: 

  • Leading and working alongside a team of research assistants and student staff to prepare samples and perform laboratory work, including creating dilutions and calibration curves, instrument method development, running analyses on equipment, interpreting results and writing reports  
  • Performing quality control and preventative maintenance on facility equipment, including troubleshooting and performing simple instrument repairs and working with service engineers to diagnose and fix more complex issues
  • Supervising and mentoring two staff members, including performance management and professional development
  • Reviewing and approving monthly billing for facility customers
  • Other duties as assigned
Required Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor's Degree in Biology, Chemistry or a field of study related to the research of the laboratory; a minimum of three years of supervisory experience; and strong written and verbal communication skills. 

Consideration may be given for a unique combination of education and Biology or Chemistry experience, such as a Bachelor's Degree in an unrelated field with at least 18 credits in a field related to research in a laboratory, or a Bachelor's Degree in an unrelated field with at least three years of laboratory experience.

Preferred Qualifications: 
  • Master's Degree in a related field
  • Minimum of five years experience with two or more types of analytical instrumentation, including NMR, spectroscopy, mass spectrometry, thermal, proteomics or chromatography
  • Previous experience managing or working in a core facility at a university
  • Strong interpersonal skills, organizational skills and a commitment to superior customer service
  • Entrepreneurial spirit to identify ways to continue and expand the services of the facility
