The Choice Program at UMBC provides mentoring and advocacy services to young people throughout the state of Maryland. We utilize an anti-racist, community-based, family-centered approach in order to promote high quality outcomes for young people and families. We engage in a collaborative process of service where young people set goals for themselves and are held accountable by supportive adults along the way. Our approach to youth development is grounded in applied critical race theory and culturally responsive, trauma-informed practices. We strive to become an anti-racist organization grounded in several core values: holistic development, belief in humans, dismantling hierarchies, and youth-centeredness.


The Jobs Coordinator will serve as a member of Choice Jobs’ Program and Partnerships team. The team’s goal is to prepare youth to successfully enter today’s workforce. Choice Jobs delivers vocational services to young people, using a model that includes individualized service planning, job readiness and life skills training, paid on-the-job training experience at our social enterprise and supported externships and job placement.

The Coordinator has two overarching responsibilities -- providing ongoing direct services for participants and working with Choice staff and partners to provide career readiness training for youth.

Specific duties include:

  • Provides direct services, individualized services, plans and case management for up to 35 Baltimore City youth either aged 10-14 or 14-20. Direct services include, among other duties: home visits, barrier mitigation, mentoring and resource brokering.
  • Leads structured classroom and individual workforce development and life skills training sessions. Some classes may be taught in Baltimore City Public Schools (BCPSS).
  • Documents, consistently and accurately in real time, all participant activities and outcomes.
  • Maintains and strengthens partnerships with BCPSS educators, community-based organizations and employers.
  • Provides regular reporting to Choice Jobs team and Choice managers on service plan progress and employment placement outcomes.
  • Participates in regular team and organizational meetings.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Required Minimum Qualifications:

Requires a Bachelor's Degree and one year of experience in education, human services or related area. 

Ability to identify and/or anticipate a problem and, when appropriate, identify solutions and implement a course of action.

Strong attention to detail and quality.  

A valid driver’s license is required.


Experience working with youth, employment readiness skills, and/or job development skills highly preferred. 

Ability and experience with focusing on workforce development by demonstrating respect, fairness, patience and efficiency to participants, employees and employers.

Ability to effectively network with others, particularly employers.
