Responsibilities: |
This position is the sole staff position supporting the department and reports to the Chair. The incumbent provides administrative support to the Department Chair, its diverse faculty, students, and courses.
Specific duties in the day to day administration of the Africana Studies department include:
- Working closely with Chair and Advising Coordinator
- Providing administrative support for full-time and adjunct faculty
- Managing the budget and all financial accounts
- Preparing purchase requisitions
- Serving as credit card (P-Card) holder
- Preparing travel arrangements and processing reimbursements
- Preparing hiring contracts
- Serving as liaison to the College's (CAHSS) Shared Services Center
- Maintaining office equipment and supplies
- Maintaining personnel records and all department documents
- Maintaining the department website
- Supervising student workers
- Coordinating the logistics for special events
- Performing other duties as assigned

Required Minimum Qualifications: |
- Bachelor's degree
- One year experience in administrative staff work
Note: Additional related experience and formal education in which one has gained the knowledge, skills, and abilities required for full performance of the work may be substituted for the education or experience requirement on a year-for-year basis with 30 college credits being equivalent to one year of experience.
- Ability to present statistical material in table, chart, or graph form
- Ability to handle confidential and sensitive matters with tact and discretion

Preferred Qualifications: |
- Knowledge of Microsoft Office, PeopleSoft, Google, and Adobe applications.
- Degree in Africana Studies/African American Studies/Black Studies/African Studies or in a humanities or social sciences field, and some basic familiarity with the broad fields encompassed by Africana Studies.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, bookkeeping, and an eye for detail are essential.
- Must be able to plan, organize, prioritize, and execute multiple and continuing assignments with general instructions and regular, pre-set deadlines.
- Also essential are excellent customer service, cultural competence skills, organizational, problem solving, and time management skills.

Salary: |
Pay Range 09 (minimum: $22.41/hr maximum: $29.68/hr) based on the University System of Maryland (USM) Pay Program.
The salary of the finalist(s) selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, Memorandum of Understanding, USM Board of Regent policies, internal equity, budget and qualifications and experience. Most salary offers will be close to the minimum part of the range.
The above salary range represents the University’s good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.
