Responsibilities: Position:   This position will be filled at either the Manager or Coordinator level based upon candidate qualifications. 

Coordinator  - With minimum supervision the Intellectual Property and Agreement Coordinator will assist in managing the UMBC intellectual property portfolio of patents, copyrights and trademarks.  Specific duties include:  review and negotiate legal documents such as but not limited to CDA’s and MTA’s to determine each party’s obligations and consistency with applicable laws, regulations, University and State policies; ensure that licensees are compliant with the terms of license agreements; provide financial and patent information to Federal, State and University agencies; and perform other duties as assigned by the Director.

The Intellectual Property and Agreement Coordinator will use discretion when handling sensitive and confidential information and will strive to handle intellectual property matters and agreements in a timely and cost-effective manner. 

The Coordinator has the option to work up to 100% remotely.

Manager  –  [In addition to the responsibilities of Coordinator ]  The Intellectual Property and Agreement Manager position also evaluates invention disclosures for patentability and commercial potential and makes recommendations regarding the filing of patent applications and works with outside counsel to file and maintain utility and other types of applications and patents and copyright protection for selected inventions.   The Manager also interacts with faculty to encourage the disclosure of inventions, to promote the technology transfer process, and provide advice and counsel on intellectual property issues associated with research.  The Manager will also work with the Director to serve as campus resource for intellectual property issues, and promote OTD on campus and across the State including internal and external funding mechanisms. 

The Manager has the option up to 40% remote/teleworking option.


Required Minimum Qualifications:  

The Coordinator will have a Bachelor’s degree, and deep knowledge of intellectual property management and contract negotiation, with at least one year (two preferred) of experience, preferably in an academic institution. 

The Manager will have a bachelor’s degree preferably in the physical sciences (advanced degree in science, business or law preferred), and at least three years demonstrated contract-writing experience and intellectual property management at a university, government, government contractor, legal private practice or similar environment. 

Both positions require excellent communication, organization and customer service skills and proficiency in the use of computers and MS Office required.  

*Note - Whether this position is filled at the Coordinator or Manager level will be determined by UMBC based upon the candidate’s qualifications.


Preferred Qualifications:  Experience with Sophia, Kuali or other electronic research administration systems.
