The Office of Health Promotion contributes to a culture of well-being and inclusive excellence at UMBC by providing evidence-based prevention initiatives and community engagement that supports students in making well-informed decisions about their health and well-being.

Position Overview:

The Director of Health Promotion (DHP) will lead the development and implementation of comprehensive health promotion initiatives to enhance the health and wellbeing of UMBC students. Reporting to the Assistant Vice President for Health and Wellbeing, this position is integral to setting the vision for health promotion strategies and programs at UMBC. The DHP will collaborate across departments and engage with diverse campus and community stakeholders to foster a holistic and sustainable approach to student health. The DHP will also spearhead marketing efforts to increase awareness of services offered by the Office of Health Promotion and Retriever Integrated Health (RIH), utilizing effective communication strategies to ensure undergraduate and graduate students are informed, engaged, and empowered to access services.

Responsibilities:

Program Oversight & Evaluation 

  • Lead the planning, implementation, and assessment of health promotion programs and services that address students' needs, focusing on Primary, Secondary, and Tertiary Prevention strategies and overall wellbeing that is inclusive of undergraduate and graduate students.
  • Utilize data and evidence to refine initiatives and ensure they are responsive to campus needs.

Collaboration & Coalition Building 

  • Build and maintain collaborative relationships with campus departments, including Student Life, Counseling Services, Health Services, and academic units, as well as external community partners.
  • Work together to address health disparities and promote a multidisciplinary approach to student health.

Assessment & Needs Identification

  • Oversee campus-wide health assessments to identify emerging trends, needs, and priorities in student health.
  • Use data to drive program development and continuous improvement.

Leadership Team Participation

  • Serve as an active member of the Health and Wellness leadership team, contributing to strategic discussions and decision-making around student health and wellbeing initiatives.

Health Education & Engagement 

  • Design and deliver health education programs, workshops, and online content to enhance health literacy and engage students in health promotion activities.
  • Collaborate with the Student Affairs Communications and Marketing Team (SACM) on social marketing strategies to increase student engagement in wellness programs.

Marketing & Awareness Campaigns 

  • Develop and implement comprehensive marketing strategies to increase student awareness of services offered by the Office of Health Promotion and RIH Counseling and Medical Services.
  • Leveraging social media platforms, email newsletters, and other communication tools to reach students and ensure they are informed about available resources.
Required Minimum Qualifications:

Education Required:  

  • Master's degree preferably in Public Health, Health Education, or a related field

Experience Required:

  • 5 years experience in health promotion, public health, or student wellbeing, with a focus on student populations
  • Strong understanding of socio-ecological models, harm reduction, and social justice principles
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate across departments and build relationships with diverse stakeholders
  • Experience in supervising and mentoring staff and students
  • Excellent communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills
  • Expertise in social media marketing and digital communication strategies
  • Ability to develop and manage budgets, as well as assess and report on program outcomes
  • Knowledge of current trends in health promotion, mental health, and substance use among students
Preferred Qualifications: 

 

Education Preferred:

  • Public Health, Health Education, or a related field Doctorate preferred

Experience Preferred:

  • A commitment to a team-oriented approach
  • A commitment to promoting a proactive and interactive approach to health and wellness in the college setting

Salary:

Salary: $108,000 - $116,000 depending on qualifications and experience.

The salary of the finalist(s) selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, budget, prior experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business considerations.

The above salary range represents the University’s good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.
