The Shriver Center - The Choice Program

The Choice Program is administered by The Shriver Center, the service-learning and community engagement hub of the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC). The Choice Program has served over 20,000 youth in Maryland for 30 years. The Choice Program strengthens communities through innovative, family-focused strategies to connect youth to educational and vocational opportunities. The Choice Program utilizes an intensive case management model that relies on trauma-informed care and a collaborative relationship with youth, families, and communities. The Choice program carries out its mission through four components: developing high expectations, offering opportunities for youth to engage in meaningful activities, fostering connections to positive role models, and linking youth and families to community resources. Programming is offered year-round in the community, to meet youth and families where they are.

The Service Coordinator is a frontline manager, overseeing a team of AmeriCorps Members serving with The Choice Program. Youth and families are referred from agencies such as the Department of Juvenile Services, the Department of Social Services, or other local community partners such as schools. The Service Coordinator plays a critical role in coordinating programs, supervising a team of three AmeriCorps Members, and connecting with resources to meet youth and family needs.

Specific duties of the Service Coordinator include: direct supervision of AmeriCorps Members as they implement services for Choice Program youth; ensuring services are delivered including providing direct service as needed; handling referral and intake process; overseeing family-centered service planning; serving as the primary representative to local community partners; and performing other duties as assigned.
