The Office of the Vice President for Student Affairs

The incumbent will report directly to the Vice President for Student Affairs and work collaboratively with the Associate Vice President for Student Affairs, divisional directors, campus constituents and external constituents to advance the institution's commitment to inclusive excellence, intercultural competence and all aspects of global diversity. Specific duties include:
- Lead diversity initiatives, ensuring the continued development of an inclusive, student-focused culture;
- Provide guidance in program and policy development within the Division of Student Affairs to ensure that inclusion and interactional diversity goals are strategically included in event planning, budget preparation, and promotion of the mission;
- Coordinate with the Vice President for Student Affairs, the Student Affairs Council (SAC), and others in division-wide diversity and inclusion training initiatives, leadership programs, and co-curricular programs aimed at building cultural competence and intercultural communication skills;
- Serve as a thought-partner with division leadership, staff, students, and shared governance entities to lead the development of a cohesive, comprehensive strategic plan focused on diversity and inclusion;
- Ensure that initiatives in the plan are prioritized, operationalized, and assessed;
- Work closely with the Office of International Education Services (IES) and other departments across the institution in support of the overall academic success, retention and engagement of International students;
- Act as lead and direct division wide and departmental initiatives in collaboration with divisional units to include: Athletics, Campus Life, Careers, Counseling, Health Services, Residential Life, Off Campus Student Services, and Transit to improve recruitment and retention of prospective staff from underrepresented groups;
- Build consensus and forge strong collaborative relationships with a diverse array of campus constituencies in a complex, higher education environment in order to achieve diversity, inclusion, equity, and community engagement goals;
- Represent the Division of Student Affairs in campus wide committees and task forces committed to expanding strategic initiatives related to compositional diversity of staff and inclusion for students, staff and faculty;
- Keep abreast of current research, trends, and best practices in diversity and inclusion, to inform policy and program development work;
- Serve as a central resource and point of coordination and communication for diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives and programs;
- Perform other duties as assigned.
|Required Minimum Qualifications:
- Terminal degree in Diversity Education, InterCultural Communication, Higher Education, Public Policy, Sociology or related field with a minimum of five years of administrative and leadership experience preferably related to advancing diversity and inclusion initiatives in a complex organization;
- Demonstrate a knowledge of the intersections of race, class, gender, sexual identity, gender identity and expression, and other areas of diversity experienced in an institution of higher education;
- Strong content knowledge and sensitivity to the concerns of underrepresented student communities, diversity and social issues, and a dedication to student growth and development;
- Inter-cultural competencies, including strong emotional intelligence, influencing skills, and the ability to engage and build relationships with university constituencies and underrepresented communities;
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively with individuals and groups from a variety of identities, cultures, backgrounds, ideologies, including personal and social orientations;
- Demonstrated experience conducting diversity and inclusion training for students, exempt and non-exempt staff;
- Experience and knowledge in recruiting and retention of compositionally diverse staff;
- Instructional design and facilitation experience;
- Skill in examining and re-engineering operations and procedures, formulating policy, and developing and implementing new strategies and procedures;
- Demonstrated track record of building consensus and forging strong collaborative relationships with a diverse array of campus constituencies in a complex higher education environment;
- Strong communication and conflict-resolution skills needed to navigate politically-charged situations to resolve problems, build consensus, and reconcile competing interests;
- Strong knowledge base of current research and trends, and best practices in diversity and inclusion, and can utilize that knowledge to inform policy and program development work;
- Possess outstanding skills in the area of intercultural diversity and social justice particularly as it relates to complex higher education environments;
- The ability to balance the needs of small groups versus large groups, see through multiple lenses and perspectives;
- The ability to engage seamlessly at multiple hierarchical levels and an understanding of environments that seek inclusion not only compositional diversity.
