Position Overview:

AOK Library at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, seeks an innovative and collaborative individual to join the Bibliographic and Metadata Services (BMS) department as a Catalog and Metadata Librarian. Duties include a range of cataloging and metadata creation, editing, and maintenance. This is a permanent status-eligible, library faculty position at the rank of Librarian I, which reports to the head of BMS.

Telework:

Responsibilities:

Primary Job Duties:

  • Perform both original and complex copy cataloging, including cataloging of print and non-print monographic materials for both general stacks and Special Collections.
  • Support initiatives related to digitization, special collections access, and other metadata-dependent efforts to describe, manage, expose, and share collections with users.
  • Perform complex problem solving related to bibliographic database corrections.
  • Participate in library, campus, consortium, and regional/national activities as appropriate.
  • Contribute to the Libraries' diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts.

The successful candidate is expected to participate in relevant professional development, scholarship, and campus and Library committee work. As a member of the library faculty, they will also be expected to meet library and university requirements for reappointment, promotion, and permanent status, as outlined in section 6.10 of the Faculty Handbook.

Required Minimum Qualifications:

  • MLIS/MLS from an ALA-accredited institution (by start of employment). 
  • Experience performing original or copy cataloging or completion of cataloging coursework.
  • Working knowledge of RDA, MARC bibliographic and authority records, LCSH and LC Classification.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal relations skills and demonstrated ability to work independently and in a collaborative environment.
  • Attention to detail, strong organizational skills, and ability to handle multiple tasks/projects simultaneously

Preferred Qualifications: 

  • Demonstrated experience performing both original and copy cataloging.
  • Demonstrated experience cataloging print and non-print materials.
  • Experience with OCLC Connexion.
  • Experience using the staff interface of an integrated library or next generation system, such as Aleph, Alma, or OCLC WorldShare.
  • Experience with a web-scale discovery service, such as WorldCat Discovery or EBSCO Discovery Service.
  • Experience with a system migration, including preparing databases and communicating with/training staff.

Salary:

This position is a 12-month library faculty appointment at anticipated rank of Librarian I. Salary commensurate with experience — minimum salary $49,000. The successful candidate will be expected to meet library and university requirements for reappointment, promotion, and permanent status, as outlined in part 6.10 of the Faculty Handbook - http://provost.umbc.edu/faculty-handbook/.

 

Hours:

This position is a full time (40 hours/week) with opportunity for telework up to two days a week.
