Position Overview:

As Faculty Ombuds Officer at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, the incumbent would receive concerns, complaints and inquiries regarding a broad range of employment related issues from faculty. The Faculty Ombuds Officer offers active listening and assistance identifying resources and potential paths to resolution. The Ombuds Officer remains impartial, operates independently from other institutional offices, and maintains confidentiality except where reporting is required by law. The Faculty Ombudsperson reports directly to the Vice Provost for Faculty Affairs.

Telework:

A hybrid telework schedule may be available. 

Responsibilities:
  • Provide guidance on key issues, and help the inquirer assess who should be involved in particular cases and at what stage.
  • Maintain a thorough understanding of what leads to conflict, the nature of conflict, and methods of resolution.
  • Maintain independent, neutral, impartial, and fair processes.
  • Provide attentive and tactful sensitivity when dealing with individuals from a wide variety of backgrounds, experiences, and cultures.
  • Conduct intake of university issues and disputes, respond to inquiries by providing support in the resolution of concerns and critical situations.
  • Based on anonymous aggregate data, prepare and deliver periodic reports to the Vice Provost for Faculty Affairs and Faculty Senate Executive Committee on trends in the reporting of issues or concerns, patterns or problem areas in existing policies and practices, recommendations for revisions and improvements, and assessments of the climate of the campus. 
  • Collaborate with other university stakeholders as needed, establish, and maintain broad contacts throughout the organization.
Required Minimum Qualifications:
  • Master of Arts (MA) or Master of Science (MS) degree.
  • Experience working within an academic institution.
  • Experience working with people of diverse backgrounds and cultures.
  • Outstanding communication skills and an ability to communicate effectively with individuals across the university, as well as, with people from various backgrounds, experiences, and cultures.
  • Maintain a professional demeanor, have strong presentation skills, and be able to organize and communicate information.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and be able to gather information, analyze it and, as necessary, help the inquirer develop appropriate options and actions.
Preferred Qualifications: 
  • Juris Doctor (JD) or Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree
  • An advanced degree combined with relevant dispute resolution training and ombuds experience. 
  • At least 5 years of related professional-level work experience.
  • Experience in higher education.
  • Outstanding networking skills.

Salary:

Salary: $114,500 - $129,500 depending on qualifications and experience.

The salary of the finalist(s) selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, budget, prior experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business considerations.

The above salary range represents the University’s good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.
