The Sherman Center for Early Learning in Urban Communities

The Sherman Center is a multidisciplinary center established with a generous gift from the George and Betsy Sherman Family Foundation. Through applied research, professional and leadership development, and partnerships with schools, families, and communities, it seeks to build a strong foundation for learning among young children in Baltimore City and develop best early education practices for urban schools.  The Maryland Early Childhood Leadership Program (MECLP) is an initiative of the Sherman Center for Early Learning in Urban Communities at UMBC. 

Responsibilities:

The Program Director of the Maryland Early Childhood Leadership Program (MECLP) is responsible for setting the direction of and managing MECLP, ensuring there are sufficient resources to meet the program’s goals.  Specific duties include:

  • Leading the successful development and implementation of current and future programs, products and components of MECLP.
  • Conducting basic data analysis to guide program improvement and ensure MECLP meets stated goals.
  • Working closely with the MECLP Advisory Committee, Sherman Center Director and staff,  and UMBC faculty, staff, and administrators to facilitate program development and success.
  • Securing grants and other financial support from government and philanthropic sources to expand and sustain MECLP, positioning it as a pioneer in early childhood leadership development.
  • Performing other duties as assigned.
Required Minimum Qualifications:

A Master's degree (doctoral degree preferred) preferably in early childhood/elementary education, political science, public policy, or social work and three years of related experience.

The qualified candidate must also have:

  • Demonstrated ability to successfully manage the programmatic, fiscal and evaluative aspects of MECLP with the competence to bring it to scale.
  • A history of developing strong, influential relationships with local, state or national leaders and organizations to further the mission of MECLP.
  • Demonstrated skills that build culturally rich and diverse coalitions/partnerships of early childhood leaders poised to accelerate cross-sector leadership in the field to significantly improve school readiness and related outcomes for early learners.
  • Successful grant writing experience and fund-raising acumen.
  • Proven ability to achieve measurable results through program development, program improvement and program expansion.
  • Ability to build public awareness through excellent advocacy and communication skills aided by strong social media skills.
  • Ability to attend occasional meetings and events outside normal business hours.
