Position Overview:

Facilities Management within UMBC is seeking a Sustainability Coordinator, who will facilitate the day-to-day operations of the university’s sustainability and climate action efforts.

Specific responsibilities include:

  • Assist UMBC's Office of Sustainability with the administration, coordination, development, outreach and planning of the University's sustainability efforts. With oversight from the Assistant Director, lead multiple campus-wide initiatives. This will include, but not be limited to, the campus composting and recycling programs, invasive species management, greenhouse gas (GHG) inventories and other campus projects. Successful implementation will require coordination with various departments on campus and with students, faculty, and staff.
  • Organize and implement, with oversight from the Assistant Director of Sustainability, sustainability enrichment activities for students, faculty and staff, various departments, and the campus community, including but not limited to career panel events, volunteering events, and community-outreach.
    Supervise and train student staff, including student employees, interns and student Eco-Ambassadors.
  • Manage the process for hiring and maintaining the paid status of these workers.
  • Responsible for campus outreach, including maintaining the online presence of the Office of Sustainability, including the website, social media, the Office of Sustainability newsletter, promoting and presenting at tabling events, attending meetings and other ways to promote the Office of Sustainability.
  • Assist with the Climate Action Planning process and assist the coordination of associated working groups and committees including making room arrangements and sending invitations and agendas.
  • Facilitate the flow of information with Climate Action Plan stakeholders to ensure follow-up on action items.
  • Participate in and maintain a record of associated meetings.
  • Investigate best practices in campus environmental sustainability at other institutions and make recommendations for UMBC to improve its programs.
Required Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's Degree, preferably related to the core functions of the position
  • One year facilitating sustainability programs in a student or professional capacity (entry level candidates may also be considered)
  • Must demonstrate ability to:
    • Assess sustainability programs and apply practical solutions
    • Drive progress forward on concurrent projects
    • Perform campus outreach, garner participation and lead volunteers/student workforce
    • Design engaging promotional materials
    • Collect, analyze, and present data in a variety of formats
    • Write and persuade effectively
    • Speak in front of diverse audiences across campus levels, including students and administrators
    • Effectively use spreadsheet, word processing, design (Canva or similar) and presentation software
  • Valid Driver's License
Preferred Qualifications: 
  • One or more years of progressive experience facilitating sustainability programs for a large, complex organization
  • Experience in higher education
  • One or more of the following:
    • LEED Green Associate (GA)
    • ISSP Sustainability Excellence Associate (SEA)
    • Chesapeake Bay Landscape Professional (CBLP)
    • Other environmental or sustainability-focused certifications
