The UMBC Police Department is comprised of experienced, diverse police professionals who provide full-service law enforcement responsibilities, police communication professionals who provide a first point of contact for police services and a highly-trained civilian staff who provide support for the Police Department mission. The Police Department is the cornerstone of a comprehensive institutional strategy to maintain a safe environment for our campus population of over 14,000 students, 3,000 faculty and staff, plus visitors. 

Position Overview:

The University of Maryland Baltimore County is recruiting for an entry level Police Officer I position. This is an excellent opportunity to start your law enforcement career.

UMBC offers competitive compensation. This role starts at $64,134 and accrues 11 days of vacation, university holidays and personal days for regular full time roles. Tuition remission is also available. 

Police officers are provided uniforms in addition to a clothing and equipment allowance.  Shift differential is available for evening and midnight shifts. You also have the potential to earn a stipend (on top of your base salary) for being radar or patrol rifle certified.

Anticipated Start Date: Anticipated Start Date based on scheduling of Police Academy.   
Responsibilities:

Specific duties and responsibilities include:

  • Enforce local, state, and federal laws
  • Patrol academic and residential areas on foot, bicycle, and Segway
  • Respond to calls for assistance and emergency services
  • Provide safety escorts
  • Prepare reports and conduct investigations
  • Traffic enforcement
  • Testify in court
  • Other duties as assigned
Required Minimum Qualifications:
  • High School Diploma or GED (some college preferred)
  • US Citizen
  • Must be at least 21 years of age (upon graduation from the police academy)
  • Must pass Functional Fitness Assessment
  • Must complete/pass the MPCTC Minimum Standard Entrance Level Police Course within 1 year of hire
  • Must possess a valid Drivers License
  • The ability to work overtime and shift work is required.

Salary: Pay Range 10 (Starting at $64,134) based on the University System of Maryland Pay Program

Candidates that meet the minimum qualifications for the position (High School Diploma/GED, U.S. Citizen at least 21 years of age, and valid driver's license) may  be invited to complete the Functional Fitness Assessment.
