Position Overview:

Reporting to the Director of Academic Advising for CAHSS, the academic advisor will provide academic support including student recruitment and success efforts to students throughout the College in various programs and departments.

Telework:

A hybrid telework schedule may be available.

Responsibilities:

In addition to routine face-to-face/virtual advising of majors, the advisor will develop recruitment strategies, represent the College at first-year and transfer orientation sessions prior to each semester, assist students in navigating majors by providing them with information about successful degree completion, extra-curricular activities, and career readiness.


The advisor will also assist new transfer students and guide them in their transition to UMBC so that they are matched with the appropriate student support services. As need arises, the advisor will also represent departments at Admissions recruiting events.

Specific duties include:

  • Providing additional advising support within CAHSS by assessing student progress towards major completion trends and individual case information
  • Helping to promote student recruitment, retention and success
  • Representing the College, as needed, at first-year and transfer orientation sessions and recruitment events
  • Coordinating work and communication between multiple campus units, including the Registrar's Office, Office of Academic & Pre-Professional Advising, Academic Success Center, Career Center, Student Disability Services, the Counseling Center
  • Performing other duties as assigned

The Academic Advisor will need to be versed in both University requirements for graduation, including General Education Program expectations, as well as the requirements of majors across the College. Availability to meet with students will include regularly scheduled face to face advising sessions and prompt responses to email inquiries, in which clear, professional, and supportive communication will be expected.

Required Minimum Qualifications:
  • Requires a Bachelor's degree
  • 3 years of academic advising or related experience
  • Must have proven ability to work with a diverse student body and demonstrated commitment to inclusive processes
  • The ability to work with different groups of University constituencies, including students, faculty, staff and administrators required
  • Must have excellent written and verbal communication and computer skills

 

Preferred Qualifications: 
  • Experience with student services preferred
  • Five years of academic advising experience preferred
  • Master's degree preferred
