Program Overview: The University of Maryland, Baltimore County Upward Bound Program is a federally funded high school college readiness project designed to provide assistance for low-income and first-generation participants. The purpose of the program is to generate in program participants the skills and motivation necessary to complete a program of secondary education and to enter and succeed in a program of postsecondary education. The project serves students enrolled in Chesapeake, Overlea, Parkville, and Kenwood High Schools.

 

Responsibilities:

The University of Maryland, Baltimore County Upward Bound Program are seeking qualified secondary school Instructors (General Associates) to facilitate the following high-school level core and elective subjects: 1) English 2) Science 3) SAT Prep 4) College Admissions.

The position requires providing instruction to high school students during the 2023-2024 academic school year component scheduled. The program is held 2-3 Saturdays per month from October to May.

  • Provides weekly instruction to program participants through one-on-one and small group teaching sessions. Prepares lessons and measures academic progress.
  • Performs classroom administrative duties such as taking attendance, recording and submitting student progress, and other record-keeping duties.
  • Develops and maintains positive relationships with program participants and their parents, high school teachers, counselors, and administration.
  • Responsible for participating in professional development opportunities, such as faculty meetings and conferences, consistent with program goals and responsibilities as approved by the supervisor.
  • Other duties within the scope of the position’s responsibilities as defined by the supervisor.
Required Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree required; current Secondary teaching certification preferred.
  • Must have computer skills, such as the ability to use word processing and email.
  • Must have excellent organizational skills to handle several tasks simultaneously.
  • Must have excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Must be able to work a flexible schedule as necessary for attendance at student meetings, conferences, etc.
  • Must be able to work successfully with diverse populations.
  • Prior experience working with low-income/first-generation adolescents is preferred.
Preferred Qualifications: 
  •  Current Secondary teaching certification preferred.

Salary: $25 - $30 hourly, commensurate with qualifications and experience.
Hours: Part-time (no more than 19 hours per week); Schedule consists of working primarily on Saturdays

Additional Information: This is a temporary position.  Initial contract is for 12 months with the possibility of renewal.
