GES recently celebrated fifty years at UMBC, and includes more than 15 full-time faculty, several adjunct instructors, approximately 50 graduate students and more than 270 undergraduate majors. As a department, we focus on teaching and research within the broader realm of environmental and climate science as well as geography, spanning the physical, natural and social sciences.

Position Overview: |
The Program Management Specialist plays a central role in the day-to-day and longer-term operation of the Department of Geography & Environmental Systems (GES) and the Interdisciplinary Science program by providing administrative support to the Chair, faculty and students.

Responsibilities: |
The Program Management Specialist reports to the Department Chair and provides administrative support to the faculty and students. The position will supervise a part-time Administrative Assistant II and student support staff.
Specific day-to-day responsibilities include:
- General business operations, including tracking and reporting on department budget, assisting with hiring processes, maintaining faculty personnel records, making travel arrangements for faculty and graduate student scholarly travel, assisting in generating figures and various reports and program reviews
- Opening and closing the office
- Ordering supplies and equipment;
- Maintaining paper and electronic records of program documents
- Providing clerical course support for full-time and adjunct faculty
- Maintaining student records
- Facilitating graduation reviews
- Assisting in coordinating special events and receptions associated with the department

Required Minimum Qualifications: |
- Bachelor's Degree
- Two years of experience in administrative staff work
Note: Additional related experience and formal education in which one has gained the knowledge, skills, and abilities required for full performance of the work may be substituted for the education or experience requirement on a year-for-year basis with 30 college credits being equivalent to one year of experience.

Preferred Qualifications: |
Experience using Microsoft Office products, including Excel. Experience with website management is a plus.
