UMBC's Office of Institutional Advancement supports the University's mission and strategic priorities in a variety of ways, including telling the UMBC story through brand, stories and design; building partnerships with community stakeholders; and fundraising to support students, faculty, alumni and programs.
Position Overview:
The Assistant Director of Alumni Engagement is an essential member of UMBC’s creative and dynamic alumni engagement team, dedicated to serving over 90,000 alumni. The primary focus of the office is to increase alumni affiliation, pride and investment in UMBC and to provide a bridge to the university community.
 
Reporting to the Director of Alumni Engagement, the Assistant Director will be responsible for building relationships with alumni, promoting alumni volunteer and engagement opportunities, creating and maintaining a sustainable structure for alumni affinity groups and regional networks to emerge and thrive and leading recent and young alumni and student programs.

Responsibilities:

Specific responsibilities include:

  • Implement strategies for a comprehensive alumni engagement and volunteer leadership program

  • Recruit and manage volunteers, create volunteer structures, drive awareness and attendance through peer and other outreach and create clear pathways for alumni to participate in volunteer and leadership activities

  • Manage administrative tasks such as scheduling and arranging meetings and regular check-ins with volunteer leaders, and prepare materials for events and meetings

  • Develop and administer volunteer retention strategies

  • Coordinate alumni volunteer efforts for signature events such as Homecoming and Family Weekend, Commencement and Convocation

  • Manage volunteer opportunities and events related to supporting Admissions efforts, which may include receptions for admitted students or other projects that support university yield efforts

  • Manage affinity-based alumni events and programs that will lead to the development of formal alumni groups and networks, including but not limited to, geographic location, student organization affiliation and professional industry

  • Create and manage affinity groups and networks and develop strategic programs, activities and communications to connect, serve and engage alumni within various affinities

  • Lead efforts to increase engagement with recent graduates and young alumni, which includes graduates of the last ten years (both undergraduate and graduate)

  • Collaborate with campus partners to create programs that encourage alumni and student connections that will aid in the transition of engaged students to engaged alumni

  • Serve as staff liaison to ad hoc affinity groups represented by the Alumni Association Board of Directors (AABOD)

  • Oversee the capture and tracking of alumni volunteer engagement metrics and regularly report on impact

  • Support of general Office of Alumni Engagement projects and events

  • Other duties as assigned

Required Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's Degree
  • Three years of experience working in alumni engagement, development or volunteer management in a higher education or similarly complex organization
  • Strong volunteer and/or relationship management experience
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • The ability to work independently on multiple projects while communicating progress to colleagues and stakeholders
  • Experience working with Microsoft Office and Google Suite
Preferred Qualifications: 
  • Master's Degree
  • Creative program planning ability
  • High attention to detail and a proactive work ethic
  • Strong interpersonal, organizational and problem-solving skills
  • The ability to motivate and work effectively with groups and individuals
  • The ability to manage multiple tasks, deadlines, and changing priorities
