Instructional Technology & New Media is a department within the Division of Information Technology that exists to help faculty solve pedagogical problems and create new learning opportunities through efficient, effective use and support of technology. This position is funded through the Division of Professional Studies

Position Overview:

The Instructional Design Specialist focuses primarily on helping faculty design and develop online and hybrid/blended courses using a variety of techniques that leverage technology and pedagogy.

Responsibilities:

Specific duties include:

  • Assist faculty in including instructional technologies and multimedia experiences in their courses that create learning experiences for students that are engaging and impactful
  • Provide professional development opportunities for faculty on online course development and instructional technologies
  • Manage the course development process with faculty and staff participants
  • Conduct quality assurance course reviews (internal and subscriber managed) using the Quality Matters rubric to ensure that all courses meet QM Standards
  • Consult with faculty on their pedagogical needs to assess if they can be implemented with currently supported instructional technologies
  • Ensure all instructional support tickets are dealt with in a timely fashion, and all instructional technology FAQs are relevant, current and used in support tickets, if applicable
  • Work with the Manager of Online Learning and the Director of Instructional Technology to develop, implement and assess annual goals as part of the strategic plan for teaching, learning and technology
  • Support the design and implementation of workshops, webinars, brown bags and training sessions for both faculty and staff, and conduct drop-ins and orientations
  • Utilize data and learning analytics to identify and promote effective practices/practitioners
  • Perform other duties as assigned

The Instructional Design Specialist will use a variety of UMBC instructional technologies including:

  • Blackboard learning management system
  • Web conferencing (Microsoft Teams, Class Collaborate, Webex)
  • Screencasting and lecture capture (Panopto, YuJa, Kaltura)
  • Poll Everywhere, VoiceThread, CourseArc
  • Assessment (Respondus Lockdown Browser, Akindi)
  • Accessibility (Ally, captioning, WCAG 2.0/2.1)
  • Learning analytics
  • Google Workspace, Microsoft 365
Required Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Education, Instructional Technology, Instructional Design or a related field
  • Three years of experience in instructional design or instructional technology, with demonstrated customer service skills and aptitudes
  • Experience in online learning technologies and pedagogies, including experience working with a learning management system (LMS), multimedia and student engagement tools
  • Experience delivering training and professional development to faculty and end users
  • Familiarity with Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.0/2.1, Universal Design for Learning (UDL) and accessibility principles

  

Preferred Qualifications: 
  • Master's Degree in Education, Instructional Technology, Instructional Design or a related field
  • Three to five years experience in instructional design, course design or curriculum design, or instructional technology, preferably in higher education
  • Knowledge of learning theories, instructional design models, and industry best practices, including the Quality Matters Rubric
  • Ability to manage multiple projects at different stages while meeting deadlines and quality standards and facilitate collaboration, support, and approval from a variety of stakeholders
  • Familiarity with microcredentialing, badging, and competency-based education
  • Higher education teaching experience is preferred; online teaching experience is a plus
  • Advanced technical writing and editing skills are welcome
