Department:

The Center for Global Engagement facilitates education abroad, immigration services, intensive English instruction, international partnerships and related functions that empower UMBC to extend beyond borders. 

Position Overview:

Reporting to the Director of the English Language Institute and Special Programs, the Assistant Director is responsible for envisioning, creating and the execution of the Center for Global Engagement's (CGE) strategic programming and assigned revenue generating projects. The Assistant Director leads the development, coordination and implementation of new and existing CGE signature programs and partnerships, such as its summer high school and university programs, grant-funded and other externally funded programs. The Assistant Director coordinates the full range of exciting special program and event logistics and budgets, supervises part-time program staff and facilitates ongoing evaluation of strategic programs. The Assistant Director collaborates closely with the external stakeholders who fund the programs and provide other support. This position provides technical direction to stakeholders, acting as a liaison to program partners, faculty and CGE leadership.

Responsibilities:

Specific responsibilities include:

  • Directing daily operations, program expenditures/budgets and managing the activities of CGE special programs. Setting internal deadlines and assisting with project management. Responsible for creating and implementing successful special programs and meeting all annual revenue targets set by the Associate Vice Provost for International Education.
  • Recruiting, training and supervising Special Programs staff, including adjunct faculty, graduate assistants, student workers and volunteers. Creating new positions to meet the unique needs of each special program and comply with all employment procedures and policies. Using market trends and grant restrictions to set competitive compensation for positions.
  • Identifying, reviewing and prioritizing special programs opportunities. Preparing proposals and application materials, including for federal grant applications, in a timely manner for stakeholders.
  • Conducting outreach, attending meetings and events with the campus community and external stakeholders to promote and facilitate programming and discuss program status and goals.
  • Performing administrative duties commensurate with the requirements of the organization, including data gathering, metrics and reports, implementing project timelines and programmatic budgets.
  • Working with internal and external stakeholders to develop and execute communications plans for prospective students/participants in SOC strategic program offerings.
  • Assisting with administration of memoranda of agreement (MOA) and partnership contracts.
  • Preparing materials and delivering presentations for partners and programs.
  • Chaperoning delegations and visitors for off-campus programming.
  • Other duties as assigned to contribute to CGE and English Language Institute (ELI) strategic priorities.
Required Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s Degree
  • Two years of practical experience in a role supporting international education, applied learning, cultural exchange or a related field
  • Experience facilitating academic and/or professional development seminars, workshops and programs for diverse populations
  • Strong interpersonal, writing and financial management skills, and familiarity with computer software programs such as Microsoft Office, Word, PowerPoint and Excel
  • Demonstrated experience working effectively with diverse groups and populations. 
Preferred Qualifications: 
  • Master's Degree in a related field
  • Experience with grant writing and administration
  • Experience with event planning
