The Meyerhoff Scholars Program has been at the forefront of efforts to increase diversity among future leaders in science, technology, engineering and mathematics by supporting students who intend to pursue a Ph.D. or combined M.D./Ph.D. in STEM. The UMBC Meyerhoff family is now more than 1,600 strong, with over 1,400 alumni across the nation, which includes over 300 students enrolled in graduate and professional programs.

Position Overview:

The Business Manager is responsible for the overall management of fiscal, budget and business services matters with the Meyerhoff Scholars Program.

Responsibilities:

Specific responsibilities include:

  • Analyzes all funding sources, including grants, state appropriations, endowed and unendowed accounts, and recommends funding sources for scholarship recipients to Director.
  • Submits cancellations and adjustments for student accounts; submits funding for student awards; reconciles scholarship funding report to determine that award amounts were correctly posted.
  • Develops departmental forecasts and budgets with the Director and monitors budget performance against forecasts.
  • Coordinates and monitors financial processes, accounting, reports, reconciliation and document retention requirements. 
  • Allocates, reconciles and safeguards departmental credit cards and statements.
  • Assists the Director by providing financial analyses, financial forecasts and strategic planning support.
  • Prepares and co-leads budget presentations to senior executives. 
  • Oversees and coordinates Human Resources matters and processes, including payroll. 
  • Verifies and initiates payments, contracts and procurement of goods and services.
Required Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's Degree, preferably in Accounting, Business, Finance, Public Administration or related field
  • Three years professional experience in bookkeeping, accounting or financial management/administration
  • Advanced knowledge of budgeting, bookkeeping, accounting and reporting principles
  • Strong organizational, communication (written and verbal) and interpersonal skills
  • Strong knowledge of Microsoft Office Excel and Word
  • Commitment to diversity and inclusion
Preferred Qualifications: 
  • Master's Degree in Accounting, Business, Finance, Public Administration or a related field
  • Five years of professional experience in bookkeeping, accounting or financial management/administration
  • Certified Government Financial Manager or CPA
Preferred knowledge, skill and abilities include: Ability to both effectively engage and establish productive relationships with students, parents, faculty, staff and external partners of diverse backgrounds; Ability to solve problems in a supportive and thoughtful manner, taking into consideration the various personalities and perspectives of customers; Ability to plan, organize, implement and coordinate advanced financial and administrative activities; Knowledge of and the ability to apply diverse financial management skills; Knowledge of and the ability to apply accepted theories, practices and principles of general accounting, book keeping, management, and administration; Ability to synthesize complex financial data from multiple sources and formats and consolidate it into a series of financial statements; Ability to maintain the integrity of data; Ability to exercise mature judgment and to make decisions; Ability to produce a variety of reports, ranging from highly detailed to succinct executive summaries; Strong presentation and leadership skills; Ability to work well under pressure to meet immediate and long-term deadlines; Ability to successfully manage multiple projects and deadlines with limited supervision or guidance; Ability to learn new computer systems and adapt to new processes; Proficient use of Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.), Google Docs, etc.; Willingness to perform complex and routine tasks; Ability to reconcile differing points of view in a confidential manner.
