Position Overview:

The International Student and Scholar Advisor will directly support international students and scholars at UMBC by providing counsel to and being an advocate for international students and scholars before, during and after their time at UMBC.

Responsibilities:

The Office of International Students and Scholars (OISS) in the Center for Global Engagement(CGE) at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC) seeks an International Student and Scholar Advisor to join its team. The CGE coordinates education abroad, immigration services, international partnerships, international student recruitment and related functions that empower UMBC to extend beyond borders. This position will directly support international students and scholars at UMBC by providing advice and counsel to international students and scholars before, during and after their time at UMBC. This position will serve as an advocate and ally for the needs and interests of the international student and scholar community by fostering strong and collaborative relationships with key campus and community stakeholders. This position reports directly to the Assistant Director of International Student and Scholar Services.

Specific Responsibilities include: 

  • Serving as a Designated School Official (DSO) of the university’s F-1 international student program and ensuring student and university compliance with Department of Homeland Security regulations.
  • Serving as an Alternate Responsible Office (ARO) of the university’s J-1 Exchange Visitor Program, by providing advising and support to students and scholars in all J-1 Exchange Visitor categories.
  • Maintaining individual immigration records in the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS) database and UMBC’s immigration case management system.
  • Working with international scholars in H-1B, TN and other employment-based statuses.
  • Maintaining an accurate and up-to-date knowledge of immigration regulations and procedures in the F, J, and H-1B categories.
  • Facilitating and supporting a variety of programming in collaboration with campus and community partners designed to ensure a successful transition to UMBC and to support retention of international students and scholars.
  • Supporting international student enrollment by working with international students through recruitment and yield.
  • Serving on various campus committees and working groups.
  • Supporting strategic initiatives, special projects, and reporting within both the ISSS team and the CGE.
Required Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's Degree 
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively both independently and as a member of a team
  • Interest in working effectively with people from different cultural, academic, ethnic and linguistic backgrounds
  • Eligibility to receive approval from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security to serve as Designated School Official and approval from the U.S. Department of State to serve as an Alternate Responsible Officer (requires U.S. citizenship or legal permanent residence)
Preferred Qualifications: 
  • Master's Degree
  • Previous experience as a Designated School Official/Principal Designated School Official and/or Alternate Responsible Officer/Responsible Officer

Salary: Salary starts at $52,000, commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Additional Information: Please note that this is a full-time contractual staff position. The contract term will be for a one-year period, with the option to renew.
