The Center for Global Engagement facilitates education abroad, immigration services, intensive English instruction, international partnerships and related functions that empower UMBC to extend beyond borders. 

Position Overview:

The Assistant Director of International Student and Scholar Services serves in an important leadership role within the Center for Global Engagement’s Office of International Students and Scholars (OISS) team. The position helps to manage the delivery of comprehensive and effective support services for international students, scholars, employees and their dependents. In collaboration with the Director of OISS, this position will develop and facilitate orientation and other programming designed to support the successful adjustment, retention and success of international students, scholars and their dependents.

Responsibilities:

Specific responsibilities include:

  • Serves as Designated School Official (DSO) of UMBC's F-1 international student program. Ensure university compliance with F-1 regulations and manage the day-to-day advising immigration support services provided to F-1 students and their dependents
  • Supervises a team of international student advisors and ensures that team is providing accurate, consistent and appropriate advising services across all areas of the international student and scholar experience including, but not limited to: F-1 immigration regulations and other personal, financial, academic, cultural, social and legal concerns. 
  • Provides advising and immigration services to J-1 Exchange Visitors, H-1B and other employment-based immigration categories. Liaises with UMBC departments and outside legal counsel on permanent residency cases as needed. Stays up-to-date with best practices and changes to regulatory rules and processes that impact J-1 Exchange Visitors, H-1B employees and other relevant employment-based immigration categories.
  • In coordination with the Director of OISS, develops, communicates and applies policies and procedures related to international students, scholars, and their dependents that ensure compliance with all applicable local, state, and federal laws while also supporting the personal, professional, and academic success of international students, scholars and their dependents.
  • Organizes and implements a variety of programming in collaboration with campus and community partners designed to ensure a successful transition to UMBC and support retention of international students and scholars. This includes, but is not limited to International Student Orientation, International Career Conference and other programs.
  • Maintains the OISS website and communication platforms as an indispensable source of information for international students and scholars as well as other members of the UMBC community.
  • Serves on various campus committees and working groups.
  • Assists the Director of OISS with strategic initiatives, special projects and reporting both within the OISS team and the Center for Global Engagement.
  • This position may be required to travel within the U.S. and abroad. Must be able to work some nontraditional hours, including evenings and weekends.
Required Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's Degree 
  • Three years of experience working in international student and scholar services at a college or university
  • Substantive experience living, working or studying outside of the United States
  • Eligibility to receive approval from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security to serve as Principal Designated School Official (requires U.S. citizenship or US legal permanent residence). Eligibility to receive approval from the U.S. Department of State to serve as an Alternate Responsible Officer (requires U.S. citizenship or legal permanent residence)
Preferred Qualifications: 
  • Master's Degree 
  • Experience directly supervising the work of professional staff preferred
