Position Overview:

The Assistant Vice President for Health and Wellbeing will serve as a strategic leader on student health and wellness for the UMBC campus. The AVP will provide strategic oversight for health and wellbeing programs, which includes developing and managing a strategic wellness plan; engaging with faculty and campus partners; supervising Retriever Integrated Health, the Office of Health Promotions and the Director for Staff Culture and Wellbeing; and serving as an engaged member of the Student Affairs Senior Leadership Team. This position will focus deeply on enhancing the student experience and will provide leadership in reframing the view of wellbeing at UMBC. This includes fostering strategic connections with engagement, student success, student support and other key interrelated services and experiences. This position will leverage current health and wellness data and statistics to tell a story about the health and wellbeing of UMBC students and to guide strategic actions related to enhancing student wellness.

Responsibilities:

Specific responsibilities include:

  • Define and articulate a clear vision for integrating engagement, identity, and well-being within the division, aligning with UMBC’s strategic goals.
  • Oversee critical areas such as Retriever Integrated Health, the Office of Health Promotion, and Staff Culture and Wellbeing ensuring that these services are delivered effectively and contribute to the holistic development of students and staff.
  • Champion diversity and inclusion initiatives, ensuring that these values are intricately woven into student affairs wellness programming and services.
  • Manage and optimize divisional resources, ensuring that programs are sustainable and meet the evolving needs of students including graduate and undergraduate students.
  • Formulate policies that support the division’s commitment to well-being and integrated services.
  • Facilitate a community of practice on wellbeing and student support to foster innovation and collaboration within and outside of the division.
  • Act as a primary advocate for student needs, serving as a liaison between students and the administration to address concerns and enhance the student experience. 
  • Ensure efficiencies in RIH and Health Promotions and develop a vision and action plan for activities that support staff culture and wellbeing.
  • Regular reporting to University System and State agencies.
  • Lead and nurture a culture of assessment using data for continuous improvement, innovation and storytelling.
  • This position serves as a member of the Vice President’s executive team and may be responsible for representing the VP or division on various meetings and committees.
Required Minimum Qualifications:
  • Master’s Degree in a Health-related field such as Counseling, Social Work, Public Health or Health Administration or in Higher Education or Student Affairs Administration.
  • Seven years of relevant progressive leadership and a track record of successful management and supervision in Health Care, Mental Health, Public Health, Health Promotion, Health Care Administration or other related fields.
  • Strong leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills. Deep knowledge of and ability to articulate health and counseling treatment models and best practice standards in relevant fields, national and local trends, state and university licensing, accreditation, and certification requirements for practitioners. Direct experience in college or university health, student support, mental health, or health promotion. Demonstrated experience partnering across a complex organization, influencing without authority, and managing crises. Ability and commitment to working effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds and the ability to effectively develop strategies for supporting health and wellbeing for students from marginalized and international communities.
Preferred Qualifications: 
  • Ph.D. in a Health-related field such as Counseling, Social Work, Public Health or Health Administration or in Higher Education or Student Affairs Administration.
