PROGRAM OVERVIEW:

The University of Maryland, Baltimore County Upward Bound Program is a federally funded high school college readiness project designed to provide assistance for low-income and first-generation participants. The purpose of the program is to generate in program participants the skills and motivation necessary to complete a program of secondary education and to enter and succeed in a program of postsecondary education. The project serves students enrolled in Chesapeake, Overlea, Parkville, and Kenwood High Schools. The position requires providing instruction to high school students during the 2024-2025 academic school year component scheduled. The program is held 2-3 Saturdays per month from
October to May.
Responsibilities:

RESPONSIBILITIES: 

  1. Provides weekly instruction to program participants through one-on-one and small group teaching sessions. Prepares lessons and measures academic progress.
  2. Performs classroom administrative duties such as taking attendance, recording and submitting student progress, and other record-keeping duties.
  3. Develops and maintains positive relationships with program participants and their parents, high school teachers, counselors, and administration.
  4. Responsible for participating in professional development opportunities, such as faculty meetings and conferences, consistent with program goals and responsibilities as approved by the supervisor.
  5. Other duties within the scope of the position’s responsibilities as defined by the
    supervisor.
Required Minimum Qualifications:

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS and ABILITIES REQUIRED:

  1. Bachelor's degree required; current Secondary teaching certification preferred.
  2. Must have computer skills, such as the ability to use word processing and email.
  3. Must have excellent organizational skills to handle several tasks simultaneously.
  4. Must have excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  5. Must be able to work a flexible schedule as necessary for attendance at student meetings, conferences, etc.
  6. Must be able to work successfully with diverse populations.
Preferred Qualifications: 
  1. Master's degree and current Secondary teaching certification preferred
  2. Prior experience working with low-income/first-generation adolescents is preferred.

Salary: $25-$30 hourly rate
Benefits:  Health Coverage Eligibility under the Affordable Care Act (ACA) may be available to employees meeting the criteria.  
Hours: Part-time (Must be able to work Saturdays and some evenings); No more than 19 hours per week

Additional Information: This is a temporary position.  Initial contract is for one (1) year with the possibility of renewal.
