Residential Life (RL) is responsible for operating and maintaining the residential facilities as well as coordinating programs and services for approximately 4,000 students who live on-campus. We work to foster supportive and inclusive living-learning environments where residential students can belong, be well, and are able to succeed.

Position Overview: |
The Assistant Director of Residential Education champions the residential experience by instilling a student-centered and learning-focused philosophy and practice in the residential education (ResEd) team and broader residential life team for achieving inclusive and supportive living-learning environments where students can belong, be well, and are able to succeed. The Assistant Director supports the Director of ResEd in the overall leadership, strategic planning, administrative-functional oversight, and supervision to the ResEd team and day to day residential community operations.

Responsibilities: |
- Serves as a member of the ResEd leadership team, providing strategic leadership toward actualizing the vision for the UMBC residential experience.
- Has an administrative functional assignment centered on areas such as student RA recruitment, selection, onboarding, training, and development; conduct and care; or residential student success initiatives, engagement, and leadership.
- Works in collaboration with the Director of ResEd to lead occupancy management and facilities management processes, including opening, closing, and roster verification.
- Supervises and is responsible for performance management of full-time Program Coordinators or approximately four full-time, live-in Community Directors, and has indirect supervisory authority for about 100 student staff.
- Collaborates with the Housing Services team on multimodal communication strategies for department initiatives (e.g., housing application process, opening and closings, staff recruitment).
- Supports the residential experience through oversight of the residential engagement plan and success initiatives, implementing student outreach efforts and community programming.
- Collaborates with internal and external partners to implement programming and services throughout the residential community and foster inclusive excellence.
- Oversees the functioning and expansion of student success initiatives, such as living-learning communities.
- Actively engages and contributes to the leadership and competency development of students and participates in leadership development offerings for sponsored student groups and staff.
- Promotes responsibility, accountability, safety, and restorative practice, responding to residential community concerns and ensuring appropriate coordination with campus partners (e.g., Dean of Students, University Police).
- Serves in the Central Residential Life on-call duty rotation, providing consultation to Community Directors on-call and triaging crisis situations.
- Supports development of crisis management protocols and procedures and internal residential case management.
- Performs other duties as assigned, or as judgement or necessity dictates.

Required Minimum Qualifications: |
- Master’s degree in Student Affairs, Higher Education Administration, Education Technology, Management Information Systems, or related field.
- Three years of professional work experience working with college students.
- Knowledge of residence life and student personnel administration; organizational and group dynamics; student development issues and theory; cultural competency and equity/inclusion issues; and customer service standards and procedures.
- Ability to create and sustain an organizational culture focused on residence hall/community student success.
- Ability to convert learning theory to practice in a residential environment.
- Demonstrated skills in supervision, effective employee development, training design and facilitation, and performance management.
- Ability to effectively resolve family and student concerns and complaints.
- Ability to direct crisis management activities and facilitate procedures for distressed students; direct and uphold policies and regulations that pertain to residence life and to student development; and resolve student and parent complaints and concerns.
- Ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community and rapidly changing technical environment.

Preferred Qualifications: |
- Five years of professional work experience working with college students.
- Prior experience living in a residence hall community
- Experience working with living learning communities or residential initiatives
- Advanced knowledge of Title IX, Clery Act, and ADA directives and guidance. Working understanding of state and federal laws and guidelines and areas of civil liability pertinent to residential campuses.
- Understanding of Risk Management mitigation and response.
- Ability to analyze problems and strategically develop and communicate creative solutions to complex issues.
- Knowledge of assessment methodology and statistical programming tools is preferred.

Salary: |
Salary: $74,000 - $83,000 depending on qualifications and experience.
The salary of the finalist(s) selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, budget, prior experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business considerations.
The above salary range represents the University’s good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.
