The Choice Program at UMBC 

The Choice Program offers a community-based, family-centered, comprehensive case management model that aims to reduce the number of youth in detention in Maryland. We provide programming in intensive advocacy, workforce development, and college and career readiness; connecting young people to the resources and support they need to successfully reach their goals.


The Service Coordinator is a front-line manager, overseeing a team of three AmeriCorps Members serving with The Choice Program. In this position, you will play a critical role in overseeing the quality and consistency of services provided to program participants. This is a hands-on position, where you will also be expected to contribute via direct service, work to develop AmeriCorps Members and monitor reporting and relationships with our referral partner.  Youth and families are referred from the Department of Juvenile Services. 

As with our other services, this position will put anti-racism into action through a focus on restorative practices, trauma-informed care and applied critical race theory. Collaboration is important in our organizational culture and is the cornerstone to ensure youth stay at the forefront of all we do. 

Specific duties of the Service Coordinator include:

  • direct supervision of AmeriCorps Members as they implement services for Choice Program youth;
  • ensuring services are delivered including providing direct service as needed;
  • handling referral and intake process;
  • overseeing family-centered service planning;
  • serving as the primary representative to local community partners;
  • serving as an on-call supervisor for field staff (including some evenings and weekends) to consult when crises arise;
  • leading hands-on and classroom trainings for AmeriCorps Members and other staff;
  • compiling and editing formal documentation of services;
  • and performing other duties as assigned.

NOTE:  Two positions are available and both are located off campus. One position is available in Baltimore City and one in Montgomery County. 

Required Minimum Qualifications:

Requires a Bachelor's degree and six months experience providing direct care services to youth, families, or vulnerable populations. Position requires use of automobile and valid driver's license. 

Note: Due to the nature of the work flow and level of responsibility, this individual maintains a flexible schedule which goes beyond a 40 hour work week.  Evening and weekend work involved.

Physical Requirements: Light lifting and moving furniture, as well as carrying materials, to prepare spaces for training activities or events; Long periods of standing and walking when conducting in-person visits; Driving Choice Program youth and stakeholders in personal vehicle, as well as Choice Program vans.
