Position Overview:

The Assistant Director (AD), under the direction of the OSP Director, will focus on the internal operations of OSP, while coordinating development and submission of extramural proposals, agreement negotiation, and execution of external agreements to aid UMBC in maximizing support for education, research, and public service activities.

While supporting the Director in the overall management of OSP, the AD will also serve as a key point of contact for policy, regulations, and general sponsored programs issues. The AD facilitates communication and problem resolution relative to pre- or post-award activities both internally and externally. The AD will also mentor/train and help develop staff within OSP, as well as research administrators across campus.

Responsibilities:

Specific responsibilities include:

  • Management of staff activities in review and submission of proposals
  • Management of staff activities in preparing and negotiating extramural sponsored grants and contracts, as well as subcontracts and other agreements with collaborating institutions
  • May directly administer one or more centers or departments
  • Policy/Regulations point of contact and UMBC Policy and Procedure Development
  • Manages OSP outreach activities, including but not limited to training for faculty and staff; course development; and representing OSP and UMBC on internal and external committees, groups, etc.
  • Assisting Director with the supervision and mentoring of staff
Required Minimum Qualifications:

Requires a Bachelor’s Degree and eight years of direct experience in research administration, preferably at an institution of higher education. Three years of direct supervisory experience required. Additionally, the working history should reflect excellent communication, organization, and customer service skills.  Requires project management skills. Position designs solutions for internal/external clients and is considered a resource for others.

Note: A related Master's Degree may be substituted for two years of experience.

Preferred Qualifications: 

Master’s Degree or equivalent is preferred. 

Experience in Research Administration at an institution of higher education is preferable.

Experience working with Kuali Research or other similar electronic research administration system and creating moderately complex reports and queries is strongly preferred.

Experience in both Central and Departmental administration of Sponsored Research activities preferred.

CRA (Certified Research Administrator) or similar certification is preferred.
