University Police Officer IV (Sergeant)

Responsibilities:

The UMBC Police Department has an opportunity available for a UPO IV (Sergeant). The selected individual will function as a shift supervisor for police services.

  • Supervise daily operations for a shift
  • Set work priorities
  • Report Reviews
  • Evaluate Staff, Conduct Performance Reviews (PMP)
  • Make recommendations for appropriate counseling, and provide discipline
  • Complete necessary paperwork in accordance with departmental regulations
  • Participate in meetings and make policy/procedural recommendations
  • Assist in shift training and evaluate training needs
  • Perform duties of a UPO II or UPO III as necessary
Required Minimum Qualifications:

 

  • Requires a High School Diploma or GED (some college preferred) and at least two years experience as a sworn police officer
  • Certification as a sworn Police Officer recognized by the Maryland Police Training Commission
  • Valid Class C Driver's License
  • Ability to work overtime and shift work is required 

*Applicants who pass the screening process will be invited to take a written test.  Applicants must pass written test with a minimum score of 70% to continue in the process.

Preferred Qualifications: 

Previous supervisory experience at the level of Master Police Officer, Corporal, or higher rank preferred.

 A background check will be required.

Salary:

Pay Range 16 based on the University System of Maryland Pay Program and MOU.  Salary of the finalist will be based on the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU)- Sworn Police Officers Bargaining Unit FOP Lodge #129.  FOP MOU Salary for this role is $107,252 (internal candidate range based on FOP MOU).

Police officers are provided uniforms in addition to a clothing and equipment allowance. Shift differential is available for evening and midnight shifts. Overtime opportunities are available.
