Position Overview:

The Baccalaureate Social Work Program at UMBC is seeking a Business Services Specialist, who will be responsible for budget and grants management, payroll processing, accounting, course schedule development, event coordination, faculty and student support and supervision of an Administrative Assistant and student employees.

Telework:

A hybrid telework schedule is available. 

Responsibilities:

The Business Services Specialist performs in four broad areas, in coordination across three campuses: UMBC, USG (Universities at Shady Grove) and UMB (University of Maryland, Baltimore):

  • Financial Management: building the program’s yearly budget followed by quarterly meetings with the Chief Financial Officer; reconciling monthly REX and PeopleSoft reports; payroll, routine financial tasks and administering faculty grants; and interfacing with the USM Foundation and donors regarding Social Work’s Foundation donations and scholarships.
  • Faculty Coordination: communications with faculty; implementing the teaching schedule; maintaining an accurate course catalog; editing Student Guide and Field Manual annually; monitoring consultancy reports, organizing recruitment efforts and assisting with all promotion and tenure procedures; compiling personnel files; scheduling required faculty reviews, assisting Assistant Dean of Field Education with communications to Field Instructors; and event planning.
  • Student Services: together with the Administrative Assistant II, planning, organizing and implementing student-related events such as graduation events; facilitating students’ stipends and travel reimbursement; and overseeing maintenance and replacement of equipment in offices and in the student computer lab.
  • Supervision: direct supervision of an Administrative Assistant II and indirect supervision of student workers.
Required Minimum Qualifications:
  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Six years progressively responsible experience in a combination of budgeting, accounting, payroll, purchasing and personnel work
  • Must have good decision making, excellent verbal and written communication and financial management and budgeting skills

Note: Additional related experience and formal education in which one has gained the knowledge, skills, and abilities required for full performance of the work may be substituted for the education or experience requirement on a year-for-year basis with 30 college credits being equivalent to one year of experience.

Preferred Qualifications: 
  • Grants management experience preferred.
  • Bachelor's degree preferred.
  • Experience in higher education is a plus.

Salary:

Pay Range 11 (minimum: $49,582 maximum: $81,782) based on the University System of Maryland (USM) Pay Program.

The salary of the finalist(s) selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, Memorandum of Understanding, USM Board of Regent policies, internal equity, budget and qualifications and experience. Most salary offers will be close to the minimum part of the range.

The above salary range represents the University’s good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.
