Position Overview:

UMBC is seeking an experienced, proactive, and solutions-focused Director of Legal Operations to drive operational change and modernization of the Office of General Counsel through the design and implementation of processes and systems aimed at optimizing departmental efficiency and effectiveness. As the first operational specialist on our growing legal team, you will be a key teammate as we continue to grow and scale. You will make an immediate impact in the department by developing rigorous planning processes, budget planning and management, developing technology strategy and delivery, communications, team development, strategic outside counsel planning, data analytics, developing departmental performance and productivity metrics and tools, and general department coordination, planning and support. This position is also responsible for recruiting and managing a team of paraprofessionals (paralegals and/or legal assistants) to enhance legal operations. The ideal candidate has a passion for creating effective and scalable processes, driving technology adoption, spearheading change management initiatives, developing key metrics to drive cost-saving solutions, and nurturing and managing relationships, is extremely organized and is always looking for opportunities for continuous improvement. Responsibilities:
  • Drive Strategic Initiatives: In collaboration with the Vice President and General Counsel, define and drive strategic and operational initiatives with on-time and on-budget results.
  • Develop Metrics: Develop and report on key operational and substantive metrics for the legal team that better inform decision-making, including matters and work product analyses.
  • Implement Tools: Identify and implement legal department tools to streamline new or existing practices, managing design, rollout, and training for new systems.
  • Leadership: Build and manage a high-performing legal operations team, including hiring, training, and mentoring direct reports to ensure the team's success and professional growth.
  • Manage Outside Counsel: Develop and enforce processes and policies to manage outside counsel usage and spend.
  • Optimization: Assist the Vice President and General Counsel with budget matters and optimize workflows within the legal department.
  • Collaborate Across Teams: Work with cross-functional teams across campus.
Required Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree with a preferred concentration in legal, political science, finance, operations, or other analytical area;

At least seven years of progressively responsible experience in legal, enterprise risk, claims management, compliance, finance, or related fields; and

At least three years of supervisory/management experience.

Salary:

Salary: $139,000 - $157,000 depending on qualifications and experience.

The salary of the finalist(s) selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, budget, prior experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business considerations.

The above salary range represents the University’s good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.
