Position Overview: |
The University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC) is seeking a Director, Security Architecture, Engineering and Operations for the Division of Information Technology, Cybersecurity Assurance and Digital Trust team. Reporting to the Chief Information Security Officer, this position directs security operations, including event monitoring, incident response, vulnerability management, and security tool operations. The role manages related projects and training, advises on secure architecture, and advances security operations center effectiveness. The incumbent also champions secure computing, cloud security, and zero trust initiatives.

Responsibilities: |
- Lead and optimize the Security Operations Center (SOC) for threat identification, prevention, detection, response, and recovery, including incident response, forensics, vulnerability management, and threat intelligence utilization.
- Define and execute key IT security projects to advance SOC capabilities, reporting progress to leadership.
- Drive the adoption of secure computing, cloud security, and zero trust principles across the university.
- Oversee security architecture and tool operations, managing lifecycle, daily functions, and policy configurations.
- Develop and maintain a training program for SOC operators.
- Perform other duties as assigned to enhance UMBC's security posture.

Required Minimum Qualifications: |
- Requires a Bachelor’s degree preferably in Computer Science or Information Systems
- Three (3) years of experience supervising security operations for information technology systems including but not limited to:
- Preventing, detecting, responding and recovering from IT security events and incidents,
- Developing risk mitigation plans for vulnerabilities and findings,
- Designing secure IT solutions, and
- Experience managing an IT Security Operations workforce.

Preferred Qualifications: |
- Master's degree preferably in Computer Science or Information Systems
- Five (5) years of experience applying security control frameworks to information technology systems including but not limited to:
- Preventing, detecting, responding and recovering from IT security events and incidents,
- Developing risk mitigation plans for vulnerabilities and findings,
- Designing secure IT solutions leveraging the principles of zero trust,
- Securing cloud computing environments, and
- Experience managing an IT Security Operations workforce.
- Certification as a Certified Information System Security Professional, or a Juris Doctor in Cybersecurity or related field

Salary: |
Salary: $151,000 to $171,000 depending on qualifications and experience.
The salary of the finalist(s) selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, budget, prior experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business considerations.
The above salary range represents the University’s good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.
