Responsibilities:

Reporting to the Deputy Chief Human Resources Officer, the Classification & Compensation Manager will be responsible for both the strategic oversight and day-to-day activities and processes associated with the university’s classification and compensation program.  Supervising one full-time employee shared with the Employment unit, specific responsibilities include:

  • conducting reviews and analysis of vacant and/or filled positions on campus to determine appropriate classification and compensation;
  • acting as a strategic partner to campus by advising department managers on classification, compensation, and organizational structure issues and requests;
  • compiling, analyzing, and evaluating HR related information in response to various compensation survey requests;
  • assisting with the development of system-wide job specifications and classification standards; assisting with the review of existing pay plans;
  • working with HR Recruitment/Employment staff regarding compensation requirements related to position vacancies;
  • assisting HR Employee Relations staff on classification standards related to bargaining unit and non-bargaining unit employees;
  • recommending and implementing new class/comp policies and procedures for the campus;
  • remaining abreast of federal, state, and USM policies governing compensation/wage programs for employees and working with the Deputy CHRO and CHRO on implementation strategies for the same;
  • updating the campus PeopleSoft Position Management system to record classification actions, as well as using the system for tracking and reporting purposes;

Other responsibilities may include testifying at class/comp hearings when necessary; conducting special projects related to pay studies; and performing other duties as assigned.

Required Minimum Qualifications:

Requires a Bachelor’s degree and a minimum of three years classification/compensation work experience. The successful candidate will also have advanced Excel skills (pivot tables, v-lookups), as well as demonstrated superior written, verbal, interpersonal communication, and analytical skills. In addition, the chosen candidate will have the ability to exercise independent judgment in the interpretation and application of HR laws, regulations, policies, and guidelines as it relates to compensation programs, and possess the ability to handle sensitive and confidential matters with discretion and tact.

Preferred Qualifications: 
  • Current or prior class/comp experience within the public sector, particularly within a university system
  • Working knowledge of PeopleSoft and/or the ability to quickly and independently learn a new HRIS system
  • Prior supervisory experience
  • World@Work CCP Certification or course work, and/or SHRM certification
