Residential Life provides facilities, services and programs that support the academic mission of the institution and enhance quality of life for students who live on campus.

Responsibilities:

Reporting to the Assistant Director of Residential Life, the MT Multi Trades Chief III - Plumbing/General Maintenance functions as a leader of a team(s) involved in multi trades work, performs as a working member of the team with expertise in more than one trade, provides guidance and instruction or supervision to others and has responsibility for project completion. Work at this level is typically associated with leading journey level work in a combination of structural, higher graded mechanical and electrical trades.

The Multi Trades Chief III is an essential member of UMBC’s creative and dynamic Residential Life team dedicated to providing a safe, comfortable and exceptional facility for residents and guests to live and learn. Specific duties include:

  • Organizes, assigns and coordinates the technical maintenance work and installation services rendered by skilled, semi-skilled and unskilled workers assigned to a multi-trade work team with a strong emphasis on plumbing
  • Performs journey level work in the assigned trade; troubleshoots problems and performs maintenance and repairs; performs repair, maintenance and installation of faucets, showers, toilets, sinks and water coolers 
  • Repairs, maintains and installs electrical fixtures, including: switches, receptacles, light fixtures, exit signs, ballasts, smoke detectors, circuit breakers and fuses
  • Repairs, maintains and installs specialty equipment, such as toilet partitions, toilet and paper towel dispensers, soap dispensers, bulletin boards and directories, mirrors, wall and base cabinets, counters, banners, temporary and permanent signage, mailboxes, handrails, guard rails, etc.
  • Operates standard equipment including power and hand tools
  • Supervises and trains assigned personnel; assigns specific tasks and evaluates results; provides instruction and training to summer and temporary staff on the proper use of tools as well as proper procedures and methods used in the completion of assigned responsibilities
  • Inspects completed job assignments for adherence to trade standards; inspects, on a regular basis, Building Systems equipment and prepares and submits inspection reports; if problems are identified throughout the inspection, the incumbent is responsible for correcting the problem and/or reporting the existence of the problem to the supervisor
  • Ensures operational readiness and safety of work areas, tools, and equipment; conducts routine inspections
  • Participates in preventative maintenance programs
  • Serves in on-call duty rotation and emergency response
Required Minimum Qualifications:
  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Six years progressively responsible experience in the trade(s) where assigned to include at least two years in a lead or supervisory capacity
Preferred Qualifications: 
  • Experience in plumbing and maintenance work

  • The ability to read, interpret, and work from blueprints, schematics, drawings and specifications

  • Experience in a residential education setting

  • Excellent customer service and communication skills

  • Basic computer knowledge

  • Experience with work order management systems

  • Possession of a valid driver’s license

Salary: Pay Range 13 (starting at $49,503-$65,569) based on the University System of Maryland Pay Program
