Residential Life, within the Division of Student Affairs, co-creates exceptional and innovative living learning environments for the campus community. Residential Life houses 4,000 students across 10 communities and one public-private partnership. Our communities range from traditional double rooms with semi-private bathrooms to suites and apartments for upper-class residents.

Position Overview:

The Community Director (CD) position at UMBC is a full-time, year-round, live-in professional staff position that provides comprehensive leadership to a residential community for a student population of 320-580 students, depending on the assigned community. The CD role is critical in developing an inclusive, responsible residential community at UMBC.

Responsibilities:

The Community Director is responsible for the overall quality of life for residents living in one of the residential communities, each housing approximately 320-580 students.

Specific duties include: overseeing the management and administration of daily residential community operations; providing crisis response; serving in emergency “on-call” rotations; implementing developmental program curriculum; advising students; supervising student paraprofessionals/graduate students; aiding in the resolution of student conduct matters; creating inclusive communities; regulating safety operations; performing collateral tasks including staff selection, training and development; summer conferences; and performing other duties as assigned.

Position is available to start immediately. 

Required Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's Degree
Preferred Qualifications: 
  • Strongly prefer a Master’s Degree in Student Personnel Services, Student Development, Counseling or a related area
  • Prior residence hall experience is desired
  • A solid foundation in human/student development theory and demonstrated ability to relate to a multi-cultural population are very desirable
