The Creative Achievement and Research Administration Team (CARAT) within the College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences (CAHSS) supports the research and creative achievement (RCA) of the faculty by providing services related to proposal development and research administration for fellowships and grants activities. CARAT assists CAHSS faculty, departments and centers in all stages of the funding process, from identifying funders and developing proposals, to administering awards and reporting to sponsors.

Position Overview: |
The College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences (CAHSS) seeks a Director to lead and oversee the day-to-day operations of the Creative Achievement and Research Administration Team (CARAT), a unit within the college, whose staff of nine employees manage an award portfolio which currently consists of around 80 sponsored awards and totaling approximately 8 million dollars in annual funding. CARAT is responsible for a range of tasks including, but not limited to research development, research administration, compliance, and consulting with CAHSS's 100+ Principal Investigators.

Responsibilities: |
In collaboration with Associate Dean of Research and Creative Achievement and Community Engagement, the Director sets objectives and goals for CARAT. Specific responsibilities include:
Leadership of CARAT
- Set Carat's future direction and goals in consultation with the CAHSS Associate Dean for RCA and senior CARAT staff, and develop long-term growth and management plans based on a review of best practices at peer institutions.
- Communicate and consult with CAHSS's 100+ Principal Investigators (PIs) to support their scholarly activities.
- Represent CARAT at Research Administration units within UMBC's Division of Research and Creative Achievement (ORCA), collaborate with ORCA units in developing policy related to research administration, serve on university or college committees related to research administration.
Ensure Compliance
- Ensure that CARAT's research administration procedures are planned and conducted in compliance with Uniform Guidance, federal and state regulations, and sponsor and UMBC policies and procedures.
- Communicate compliance regulations and policies regarding sponsored RCA activities to PIs and staff.
- Advise new PIs on grant lifecycle services provided through CARAT.
Management and Supervision of employees
- Maintain an inclusive and equitable working environment that is free from discrimination and harassment.
- Lead, supervise, and mentor CARAT staff and conduct recruitment, hiring, training, and annual performance management plans (PMP) for direct supervisees.
- Develop personnel guidelines, set performance standards and accountability, monitor personnel efficiency, ensure professional development opportunities for all team members, and manage equitable workload distribution.
Involvement with and Oversight of Operations
- Provide pre-and post-award administration support for PIs.
- Oversee CARAT operations for the continuous improvement of CARAT business processes.
- Respond to institutional reporting requirements; plan and implement grant and fellowship trainings and workshops for CAHSS faculty in collaboration with the senior CARAT staff, ORCA, and CAHSS Research Centers.
- Collaborate with senior CARAT staff to prepare an annual report on sponsored research trends, financial and statistical analyses, successful strategies, and areas for improvement, based on the results of a biennial survey of CAHSS faculty.
- Oversee CARAT's annual operating budget.
- Work with the CAHSS Associate Dean for RCA and senior CARAT staff to problem-solve situations involving sponsored research.

Required Minimum Qualifications: |
- Bachelor’s degree in a business field
- Six years of relevant experience in research administration, grants management, or closely related professional experience, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
- Excellent written and verbal communication, interpersonal and analytic skills, as well as the ability to read and interpret grant documents and reports, are required.
- Knowledge of major governmental funders is expected.
- Demonstrated competency in management responsibilities (such as strategic planning, leadership, and financial stewardship) is needed.
- Experience in managing multiple projects, while also facilitating organizational teamwork through efficient problem-solving and staff mentorship is required.
- The successful candidate must possess professional maturity, personal integrity, and the ability to approach matters with diplomacy.

Preferred Qualifications: |
- Master's degree in an appropriate area of specialization.
- Familiarity with funders such as foundations, non-profits and private funders.
- Ability to work with various software technologies such as PeopleSoft Financial and Human Resources and Kuali.
- Three plus years of successful staff management and supervisory experience, including mentoring and training experience.
- Possession of a Certified Research Administrator (CRA) credential or Research Administration experience at a senior level in a research university.

Salary: |
Salary: $119,500 – $130,000 depending on qualifications and experience.
The salary of the finalist(s) selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, budget, prior experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business considerations.
The above salary range represents the University’s good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.
