Office of the Provost

The Office of the Provost is responsible for supporting and maintaining the academic integrity of the University by providing oversight of all programs and research in order to ensure their quality and advancement.


The Business Manager of the Provost Office of Financial Affairs and the Academic Affairs Other Units Shared Services Center (AAOU SSC) reports directly to the Associate Provost for Financial Management. This position will administer the business operations of the Provost Office of Financial Affairs/Academic Affairs Shared Services Center.

The incumbent will oversee the business and administrative functions of the Office of Financial Affairs/AAOU SSC. The incumbent also will be responsible for facilitating the objectives determined by the Associate Provost for Financial Management while ensuring compliance with all institutional and/or external policies or regulations. The incumbent will manage federal, state, local and foundation-sponsored contracts and grants for the Office of Financial Affairs/AAOU departments that report directly to the Provost.

This position relates to the mission of the department by providing financial analysis, financial management and business services support to the Associate Provost for Financial Management/Provost Office of Financial Affairs/AAOU SSC as well as various Academic Affairs Colleges/Units reporting to the Office of the Provost.

The position will assist with directing the AAOU SSC and its functions including administration of the hiring processes, payroll, procurement and accounts payable and others as they are introduced to the SSC. The incumbent will directly supervise the Shared Services Staff including managing performance,  directing day-to-day work and maintaining collaboration with managers and directors of other central service organizations throughout the University including Financial Services, Payroll, Human Resources, Contracts & Grant Accounting, Procurement, and Sponsored Programs to ensure compliance with policies. The Business Manager supervises the review and reconciliation of the Provost Office/AAOU SSC expenditures and revenues. This includes reconciling, monitoring, reviewing and verifying accounting records and transactions for accuracy, timeliness and adequacy of supporting documentation.

The Business Manager works closely with the Associate Provost for Financial Management to oversee and facilitate the annual budget and fiscal year-end process for the Provost Office/AAOU SSC. This includes providing historical data and projections, analyzing budgets, processing budget requests, budget revisions, monitoring revenue and expenses and identifying problem areas. The Business Manager will assist the Associate Provost for Financial Management with strategic financial goal setting including carrying out reporting, budgeting and forecasting for the Provost Office/AAOU SSC. The position will oversee grant financial administration for the Provost Office/AAOU SSC. The Business Manager will provide advice and counsel on business, fiscal, human resources and administrative matters to the Associate Provost for Financial Management. The position coordinates internal and external audits or other compliance matters relating to the AAOU SSC.

The position will provide excellent customer service to all constituencies. The Business Manager will oversee requests for financial data and reports as well as assist with the preparation of the Provost Office/AAOU SSC financial analysis, cost analysis, cost analysis, financial reconciliations, financial reporting and payroll administration and performs other duties as assigned.

Required Minimum Qualifications:

Education/Experience:  Requires a Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or a related discipline and at least three years (five preferred) of managerial experience in a complex operating environment with experience in enterprise-wide systems and in sponsored projects. 

Preferred Qualifications:  The position requires extensive customer service experience in a team-oriented environment of continuous improvement. Higher education or nonprofit management experience preferred as well as experience with PeopleSoft financial management systems that include HRMS, procurement, G/L, and grants accounting. The incumbent must have excellent verbal communication and written skills, strong analytical and critical thinking skills as well as a strong work ethic.
