Position Overview: |
Reporting to the Director of the Office of Health Promotion (OHP), the Assistant Director for Health Promotion will oversee the strategic development, implementation, evaluation and reporting of departmental health promotion and health education activities. Additionally, this position will work in collaboration with other departments within the Division of Student Affairs and across the UMBC community to build departmental capacity and provide consultations to other units seeking to implement health promotion, public health and health education activities. This position will provide operational and administrative support to the Director, which includes departmental purchasing and internal budget management. The department provides graduate and undergraduate students with the opportunity to gain skills and practical experience within public health and health promotion. The department is critically supported by 17 student staff members. This position is charged with developing and providing management of training, projects, resource support and evaluation of all OHP student staff. This position will assist with the leadership of the department and support the team in developing evidence-informed strategies for enhancing student health and wellbeing.
The Assistant Director understands college students' unique health and wellbeing needs and how those needs can vary across race, gender, religion, age, socioeconomic status and other identities. The incumbent uses health equity and inclusive excellence lenses to develop intersectional programs, initiatives and outreach efforts that contribute to a culture of wellbeing at UMBC for all students. The Assistant Director actively contributes to an inclusive culture for students and staff with OHP and the broader campus community. The position will develop and administrate training for all student staff and assist with supervision of entry-level professional staff training. Additionally, the position will participate in the development of operating standards and procedures, long-range goals, and annual objectives. The Assistant Director for Health Promotion will assume departmental oversight responsibility in the absence of the Director.

Responsibilities: |
- Develop health promotion and health education activities and initiatives, which includes the selection and application of appropriate behavior change theories, the development of learning objectives, evidence-informed content and the development of assessment tools.
- Define and develop key performance indicators and assessment activities, and reporting methods across all departmental programming, which include programming developed and implemented by professional and student staff to gauge success.
- Recommend and contribute to the department’s strategic plan as it pertains to departmental programming and the Peer Health Education Internship Program.
- Recruits, hires, trains and evaluates 15 Peer Health Educator Interns based on their performance and the completion of required deliverables.
- Provide direct supervision and mentorship to front desk office assistants, including but not limited to equitable distribution of projects, scheduling, developing clear responsibilities and training procedures and assessing performance.
- Oversee all departmental programmatic and training purchases, which includes the acquisition of supplies and software licenses.
- Develop and recommend departmental programming and Peer Health Educator Internship operations budget based on needs assessment data, key performance indicators, departmental programmatic goals and previous budgets. Recommendations should include program operations cost and training needs.
- Manage departmental programmatic, training and office assistant and intern stipend budgets, which includes spending patterns and tracking hours worked.
- Develops and manages critical partnerships with external stakeholders and community partners to support a comprehensive approach toward student wellbeing.
- Serve on Division of Student Affairs and university-wide long-term and ad hoc committees health and well-being committees.

Required Minimum Qualifications: |
- Master's Degree, preferably in Public Health, Health Education, Health Promotion or a related field
- Two years of professional experience in Public Health, Health Education or Health Promotion
- Experience developing, implementing and evaluating health promotion and health education programs including theory selection, learning objectives and assessment tools
- Supervisory experience and skills to effectively manage student employees
- Experience conducting literature reviews, needs assessments and program evaluations; experience interpreting findings and developing plans to programmatically and strategically respond to the findings
- Demonstrated intercultural competence, and a continuing commitment to advance health equity, inclusion and social justice practices in support of a diverse community
- Demonstrated leadership abilities, which can include overseeing campus initiatives, representing a team in committees or coalitions or leadership in professional organizations

Preferred Qualifications: |
- Certified Health Education Specialist (CHES) preferred
- Three or more years of professional experience in Public Health, Health Education or Health Promotion.
- Analyzing health-related professional literature relevant to college students and assessing its applicability and utility for effectiveness on a particular campus
- Demonstrated ability to incorporate underrepresented and historically marginalized and oppressed populations into health promotion processes and initiatives
- Experience working in higher education

Salary: |
Salary: $61,000 - $69,000 depending on qualifications and experience.
The salary of the finalist(s) selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, budget, prior experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business considerations.
The above salary range represents the University’s good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.
