The Choice Program at UMBC 

The Choice Program at UMBC is an intensive community-based program providing services to young people in Maryland for over 30 years. The Choice Jobs Program is an important initiative within Choice’s broader vision and mission that prepares young people for the work world. The Jobs Program has three key components including curriculum-based job and life skills classroom training, paid on-the-job training through employment at The Choice Program’s social enterprise, Flying Fruit, and supportive job placement services.


The Jobs Mentoring Coordinator will serve within the leadership team of the Choice Jobs Program.The Choice Jobs Program prepares program youth to successfully enter today’s workforce. We deliver community-based vocational services to young people, using a model that includes job readiness and life skills training, paid on-the-job training experience at our social enterprise, and supported job placement.

The Jobs Mentoring Coordinator has three overarching responsibilities: 1) Outreach to youth ages 10- 14 to engage them in goal setting activities and offer career exploratory experiences 2) establishing new community partners, maintain and reinvigorate existing relationships with community based organizations to secure enrichment opportunities for Choice Jobs participants and 3) Effectively matches Choice participants with enrichment opportunities in their designated service area. Although this position will serve the whole city, emphasis will be placed in the Cherry Hill community.  

Specific duties include:

  • Recruit and engage youth ages 10- 14 to engage them in goal setting activities and enrichment activities based on their interests, needs, and desires. 
  • Establish and maintain relationships with local resource providers in Baltimore City to directly benefit participants in the Choice Jobs Program 
  • Develop marketing materials to cultivate community based connections and enrichment opportunities.
  • Provide support to participants through holistic case management, and complete monthly service plans.
  • Document, consistently and accurately, in real time, all participant and family contacts, activities and outcomes into ETO (Efforts to Outcomes).
  • Provides regular reporting to Choice Jobs team and Choice managers on mentoring outcomes.
  • Provide structured out of school time activities and life skills training sessions to Choice Jobs Program participants.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Required Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree
  • One year of experience working with youth on goal setting or youth development skills
  • Must have use of an automobile and a valid driver's license
Preferred Qualifications: 
  • Ability and experience with focusing partnership development by demonstrating respect, fairness, patience, and efficiency to participants, employees, and partners
  • Ability to identify and/or anticipate a problem & when appropriate, identify solutions and implement a course of action
  • Strong attention to detail and quality
  • Ability to effectively network with others, particularly employers

Note: Due to the nature of the work flow and level of responsibility, this individual maintains a flexible schedule which goes beyond a 40 hour work week.  Evening and weekend work involved.
