Responsibilities:

The Research Specialist provides technical support for the core imaging facilities in the College of Natural and Mathematical Sciences (CNMS). Accomplishes responsibilities by applying specialized and theoretical knowledge, principles, and concepts of a professional discipline normally acquired through advanced education or specialized training. Duties include providing research expertise and training for instrument users on a range of optical and electron microscopes as well as the development and execution of fee-for-service imaging projects. The Research Specialist also assists with facilities operation, which includes resolving technical issues, administrative tasks such as record keeping and billing, the development of facility policies and procedures, and supervision of junior staff and undergraduate and graduate students.

Specific duties and responsibilities include:

  • Provide consultation and support for instrument users, including basic and advanced training in microscopy operation, and guidance in microscopy-related experimental design, specimen preparation and data analysis.
  • Perform microscopy and laboratory equipment maintenance including instrument alignments and troubleshooting complex technical issues of mechanical and software related components
  • Independent execution of fee-for-service image acquisition for UMBC and off-campus clients, which may involve experimental design, sample preparation, and/or data analysis
  • Assist in the training of facility staff and student workers, and provide direction and motivation to facility staff and student workers on various projects.
  • Administrative duties including but not limited to monitoring equipment reservations and usage, record keeping, ordering and maintaining supplies, billing, and assistance in the development of standard operating procedures and facility policy
  • Other duties as assigned by the manager    

Required Minimum Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree with two years of general research experience in the life or materials sciences.  Consideration may be given to a unique combination of education and experience such as a bachelor’s degree with four years of general research experience.
  • At least two years of advance microscopy experience operating one type of microscope such as confocal, TEM, SEM, or AFM. 
  • Ability to perform essential duties independently with attention to detail.
  • Possess effective time management skills and the ability to manage multiple tasks or projects.
  • Must also possess excellent verbal and written communication skills and a commitment to exemplary customer service.  

Preferred Qualifications: 

Supervisory or training experience
