Position Overview:

The Director of Media Relations advances the university’s mission by developing and executing a comprehensive media strategy encompassing campus, local, national and international media, and serves as UMBC’s primary media spokesperson.

A hybrid telework schedule may be available. 


Specific duties include:

  • Serve as university spokesperson, responding to media inquiries and sharing information proactively with journalists; manage news conferences, press briefings and media on campus

  • Develop and execute a comprehensive media strategy comprising campus, local, national and international media

  • Provide expert strategic consultation, training and support, including media briefings and logistical support, for media relations to the University President and members of senior leadership

  • Partner with colleagues in University Communications and Marketing in executing media strategy, especially across social media channels and in providing media support to UMBC faculty, staff and students as appropriate

  • Serve as a member of the university’s crisis communications team and support all emergency management efforts

  • Cultivate relationships with members of the press and pitch stories in service of advancing the university’s strategic priorities for brand recognition and differentiation among key audiences

  • Lead the tracking and analysis of media coverage and the sharing of coverage among internal audiences; manage vendor relationships for media tools

Required Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor’s Degree and five years of experience in media relations or public relations 

Preferred Qualifications: 

Seven or more years of experience in media relations and/or public relations, including experience in higher education and as a media spokesperson
