Position Overview: |
The Facilities Supervisor provides administrative supervision and technical support of the general and daily operations of the Central Plant and will act as the chief operating engineer responsible I for the safe, constant, and efficient operation, maintenance, service and repair of the Central Plant.

Responsibilities: |
The Facilities Supervisor will be responsible for the Central Plant, Satellite Plant, and Chesapeake Employers Insurance Arena. The Central Plant equipment includes four 50 million-BTU boilers producing High-Temperature Hot Water (HTHW) and six Centrifugal Chillers ranging from 1000 to 2000 tons. The Satellite Plant equipment includes three Hot Water Package Boilers ranging in size from 4.5 to 21 million BTUs and two 640-ton Centrifugal Chillers. This position is responsible for oversight of the three Condensing Boilers serving the Chesapeake Employers Insurance Arena. The systems being managed also include numerous pumps up to 1500 horsepower, multiple cooling towers, and additional plant equipment. Incumbents at this level typically supervise Trades Chiefs, Trades Supervisors, and/or Engineering /Electronic Technicians. The facilities supervisor will also serve as a working supervisor for the specialty area.
Note: Position is considered essential personnel.
Specific duties include:
- Plans, organizes, assigns, and reviews the maintenance and repair work, installation services, and/or complex systems upgrades
- Recommends and oversees internal operating procedures
- Supervises and trains assigned personnel
- Assists in budget projections, budget preparation and departmental planning for area of responsibility
- Coordinates inspections of facilities by authorities having jurisdiction, facilities the planning, delivery, and work of vendors and contractors
- Ensures adequate supplies, materials, and equipment are maintained for area(s)
- Performs estimates of time, labor, and materials to be used on assigned projects; prepares contractual specifications for construction, renovation, or overhaul work to be done by outside contractors
- Prepares a variety of special and recurring reports and analyses reflecting daily operations and project status
- Inspects shop and work areas for adherence to safety, sanitary, and security regulations; develops safety procedures related to specific work tasks
- Operates and ensures operational readiness and safety of the tools and equipment of the trade(s)
- Repairs and/or directs the repair of machinery and equipment using hand and power tools, precision measuring devices and testing instruments
- Performs other duties as assigned

Required Minimum Qualifications: |
High School Diploma or GED
Experience Required: Ten years progressively responsible experience in the operation of boiler and chiller plants. Three years of this experience must have included the supervision of journey level mechanics in the boiler/chiller plant trade
Valid Maryland Noncommercial Class A,B, and C or equivalent driver’s license

Preferred Qualifications: |
Maryland 1st Grade Engineers License and Universal CFC license
|

Salary: |
Pay Range 16 (minimum: $64,907 maximum: $106,997) based on the University System of Maryland (USM) Pay Program. It is anticipated this role will be hired above the midpoint.
Facilities Management provides free uniforms and shoes for skilled trades positions. Tools are provided for use on the job as well as a UMBC owned vehicle to travel to worksites on campus. UMBC also assists with keeping trades licenses current and obtaining needed training. Opportunities for overtime pay may be available.
The salary of the finalist(s) selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, Memorandum of Understanding, USM Board of Regent policies, internal equity, budget and qualifications and experience.
The above salary range represents the University’s good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.
