Position Overview: |
The Learning & Development Specialist will play a key role in advancing the mission of the Community and Culture Unit within the Division of Institutional Equity (DOIE) at UMBC. The Specialist is a culture builder who will foster an inclusive campus environment and changed behaviors through educational initiatives, dialogue facilitation, direct programming, and meaningful engagement with students, faculty, and staff. Reporting to the Associate Vice President of Community and Culture, the Specialist will champion and celebrate inclusive excellence across the university. Responsibilities: |
Program Management and Coordination
- Develop, implement, and assess innovative programs and cohort-based learning experiences focused on topics that cultivate inclusion, promote cultural humility, foster empathy and understanding across difference, encourage shared responsibility, and champion overall inclusive excellence at UMBC.
- Work with the Associate Vice President to co-design and co-deliver relevant workshops and related professional development opportunities for faculty and staff.
- Collaborate with campus partners, including: Human Resources, Faculty Affairs, and Student Affairs, to ensure alignment across relevant initiatives and strategic collaborations around institutional priorities.
- Oversee logistical planning, communication strategies, and resource allocation connected to training and education.
- Develop and maintain assessment tools to measure program effectiveness, track participation, and collect feedback to improve offerings.
- Provide direct oversight and management for virtual learning programs and curriculum-based learning opportunities.
Dialogue Facilitation and Training
- Serve as a facilitator and trainer on the Division’s facilitation and training team and co-facilitate dialogue sessions for students, faculty, and staff, creating spaces for authentic engagement and relationship-building across difference.
- Receive cross-training in other campus dialogue approaches (Racial Healing Circles, Restorative Practices, etc.) to support campus-wide initiatives such as identity-based dialogues, community conversations, and restorative practices to build bridges across the community.
- Build capacity among campus stakeholders to create spaces for authentic engagement and connection across differences.
- Facilitate workshops, panels, and discussions as part of special events to promote dialogue and learning on relevant topics, including inclusion, radical love, and belonging.
Special Events
- Organize and host conferences, symposiums, guest lectures, and other campus-wide events such as the “Annual Symposium on Inclusive Excellence” and the “Champion’s Celebration” initiatives, which are focused on creating a culture of best practice sharing and celebrating inclusive excellence in action at UMBC.
- Work with campus resources such as Accessibility and Disability Services, Chartwell’s Catering, etc., to ensure event success.
- Assist in coordinating events that celebrate diverse identities, including cultural history months (e.g., Native American Heritage Month, Black History Month, Hispanic Heritage Month, Disability Awareness Month, Pride Month) and International Day of Tolerance.
Faculty/Staff Engagement
- Serve as a connection point for tailored consulting and support for faculty and staff on incorporating inclusive practices in their teaching, research, and administrative roles.
- Work with the AVP to lead and organize initiatives to enhance employees’ belonging and connection, ensuring their voices are centered in the university’s equity and inclusion strategies.

Required Minimum Qualifications: |
Education Required:
- Bachelor’s degree preferably in education, organizational development, sociology, social work, or a related field.
Experience Required:
- Three years of related experience in diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging services for individuals and organizations situated on college campuses, in non-profit organizations, or across communities.
- Experience in developing and facilitating dialogue programs, particularly on power, privilege, and oppression issues.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with a demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with diverse campus stakeholders.
- Ability to work independently, problem-solve, take initiative, set priorities, and handle multiple projects efficiently and effectively
- Commitment to the values of inclusion, equity, and social justice
- Experience leading, hosting, and assessing large-scale events and programs
- Demonstrated experience in program development, training, and facilitation related to diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging.
- Exceptional communication and organizational skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities.
- Passion and excitement for working in a higher education environment committed to inclusive excellence.

Preferred Qualifications: |
Education Preferred:
- Master’s degree in education, organizational development, sociology, social work, or a related field, or equivalent experience.
Experience Preferred:
- Advanced training and certification related to diversity, equity, inclusion, organizational change, or organizational development.
- Demonstrated understanding of adult learning theories and relevant pedagogies.
- Demonstrated experience supporting diversity and inclusion roadmaps, annual goal planning, and other multi-part projects.

Salary: |
Salary: $68,000 - $77,000 depending on qualifications and experience.
The salary of the finalist(s) selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, budget, prior experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business considerations.
The above salary range represents the University’s good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.
