Department:

The Choice Program at UMBC provides mentoring and advocacy services to young people throughout the state of Maryland. We utilize an anti-racist, community-based, family-centered approach in order to promote high quality outcomes for young people and families. We engage in a collaborative process of service where young people set goals for themselves and are held accountable by supportive adults along the way. Our approach to youth development is grounded in applied critical race theory and culturally responsive, trauma-informed practices. Position Overview:

The Manager of Personnel and Staffing oversees recruitment, retention, learning and restorative practices. The position ensures that the organization’s policies, practices and programs align with established values of anti-racism, equity and wellbeing.

Responsibilities:

The incumbent leads efforts to maintain and strengthen a workplace culture that promotes inclusive excellence, learning and wellbeing. The incumbent is responsible for ensuring that Choice staff and AmeriCorps members have what they need to provide high quality services to young people. The incumbent will achieve success by collaborating with internal and external stakeholders.

Specific responsibilities include:

  • Develops best practices for managing people that hold high expectations, promotes accountability and uses restorative processes with corrective action
  • Strengthens and enhances a workplace culture that promotes equity and wellbeing; oversees learning communities that motivate AmeriCorps members and staff to work for racial justice within predominantly white institutions
  • Develops, implements, improves and assesses strategies for recruitment, onboarding and retention
  • Supervises members of the personnel and staffing team
  • Ensures compliance with policies set forth by UMBC Human Resources and AmeriCorps recruitment, onboarding, retention, reclassification and separation from the organization (i.e. submitting accurate personnel actions to HR, verifying background checks, maintaining accurate records of separation, coordinating site visits, responding to formal inquiries)
  • Maintains accurate, confidential personnel files and data in secure databases including PageUp and eGrants
  • Facilitates referrals to UMBC Office of Equity and Inclusion, HR and other partners
  • Facilitates strategic planning processes in conjunction with leadership teams
  • Other duties as assigned
Required Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's Degree
  • Two years of supervisory/administrative experience
  • Two years of direct service in human services
  • Driver’s license and use of a vehicle with current registration and insurance 
Preferred Qualifications: 
  • Three years of supervisory/administrative experience
  • Three years of direct service in human services
  • Two or more years of leadership in organization committed to equity and inclusion
  • One or more years of service/employment in an AmeriCorps organization
