Assistant Vice Provost for Curriculum Development

Position Overview:

Reporting to the Vice Provost for Academic Affairs, the Assistant Vice Provost for Curriculum Development provides  consultation, advice and support to UMBC faculty, department chairs and deans on program development and  changes, related policies of the University System of Maryland (USM) Board of Regent policies, and regulations of the  Maryland Higher Education Commission (MHEC) for the purpose of advancing the UMBC faculty’s curriculum planning  goals. The position manages review and approval processes for UMBC proposals within UMBC and with USM and  MHEC, assuring policy and regulatory compliance in curriculum development and review.

Responsibilities:
  • Serve as the primary contact in Academic Affairs for matters related to curriculum development,  program approval, changes to academic programs and titles, assignment and changes to CIP codes,  suspension and discontinuation of academic programs. Advise and support faculty, chairs, and deans in  curriculum development and approval in compliance with USM policy and MHEC regulations.
  • Represent the Office of the Provost on university-wide committees and university-wide initiatives  involving program development and curriculum.
  • Write and update UMBC guidelines consistent with MHEC/COMAR regulations and guidance and USM  Board of Regents policies. Serve as compliance officer within Academic Affairs regarding  MHEC/COMAR regulations on academic programs.
  • Identify and analyze labor market data to determine program development opportunities, career  pathways, program demand, and potential partnerships.
  • Lead initiation of program implementation. Provide coordination, oversight, and trouble-shooting to  program implementation with campus partners.
  • Collaborate with Faculty Governance and the Academic Catalog  management team in development of a university-wide calendar of dates for faculty to submit  program proposals.
  • Manage, update, and periodically audit UMBC’s  Degrees and programs page and the UMBC portion of MHEC’s Academic Program Inventory.
  • Manage circulating Letters of Intent, New Program Announcements and Substantial Modifications  from other Maryland academic institutions and assess them against UMBC’s programs.
Required Minimum Qualifications:
  • Master’s degree from an accredited college or university in a related field.
  • Minimum of five years of professional experience within higher education in fields directly related to the functions of  the position. Knowledge of federal government and state university higher education regulations and processes related  to curriculum. Skill at understanding data. Skill at reading, understanding, and following technical regulations. 
  • Proven project management skills with demonstrated ability to meet multiple deadlines simultaneously. Relationship building and collaborative leadership skills. Can work effectively as part of a team as well as independently to manage  own workload with minimal supervision. Skilled in cultural competency and the ability to communicate effectively in a  culturally sensitive manner with individuals and groups of diverse backgrounds.
Preferred Qualifications: 
  • Doctorate degree from an accredited college or university in a related field.
  • Background in curriculum development. Knowledge of regulations governing academic program development and  approval in Maryland. Experience using labor market data and analytics. Experience with data warehouse and  reporting.

Salary:

Salary: $143,000-160,000 depending on qualifications and experience.

The salary of the finalist(s) selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, budget, prior experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business considerations.

The above salary range represents the University’s good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.
