For more than 30 years, the Department of Computer Science and Electrical Engineering (CSEE) at UMBC has produced the Computer Science, Computer Engineering, and Electrical Engineering leaders of tomorrow. Currently, the department offers two undergraduate degrees in computer science and computer engineering with approximately 2300 students, and graduate degrees in five programs computer science (MS and PhD), computer engineering (MS and PhD), electrical engineering (MS and PhD), data science (MS), and cybersecurity (MS) with a total of approximately 1270 students.

Position Overview:

This position will help CSEE in various areas. The primary need is to provide redundancy Information Technology support to Faculty (CSEE department). Staff (CSEE, COEIT, and CWIT departments), and Students (CSEE department undergraduate and graduate). The areas of support are business, research, and academic. The type of systems include 24/7 data center servers (locally hosted hardware (some use nspawn containers) and virtual/cloud), workstation/desktop/laptop computers, mobile devices, Audio/Visual systems, and networks. Operating Systems include Linux (server and desktop), Windows (desktop), and macOS (desktop). Tasks include installs, upgrades, troubleshooting software, hardware, application, and user problems, and implement automation by writing scripts.

The secondary need is to provide Engineering Lab Technical Support. Instructional labs will get upkeep of materials, equipment, and scientific/engineering software. Equipment, devices, and software is to be tested. Supplies and materials are to be reordered as needed. Graduate Teaching Assistants are to be trained on laboratory procedures and equipment use for courses.

Telework:

A hybrid telework schedule may be available. 

Responsibilities:
  • Provide user support to over 1400 graduate students, faculty, and staff using Linux, Windows, and macOS, in business, classroom, and research environments.
  • Setup, manage, maintain, and troubleshoot networking, server, desktop, and laptop hardware.
  • Help in managing and maintaining a production Linux 24/7 server environment, physical and virtual (cloud, VM, and containerization).
  • Support instructional lab ensuring maintenance and basic upkeep of computer engineering labs, materials and equipment and scientific/engineering software.
  • Conduct basic testing of equipment, devices, and software for computer engineering labs, and reorder of supplies and materials as needed.
  • Train graduate teaching assistants on laboratory procedures and use of equipment for various courses.
Required Minimum Qualifications:

Education Required: Bachelor's Degree preferably in Computer or Information Technology related disciplines.

Experience Required: One year experience with Linux System Administration (configuring, maintaining, and/or upgrading); familiarity with Computer/Electrical Engineering classroom lab equipment

Preferred Qualifications: 

Experience Preferred: At least three years experience with Linux System Administration (configuring, maintaining, and/or upgrading); familiarity with Computer/Electrical Engineering classroom lab equipment

Salary:

Salary: $66,000 - $75,000 depending on qualifications and experience.

The salary of the finalist(s) selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, budget, prior experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business considerations.

The above salary range represents the University’s good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.
